Has anyone used gimbal set ups that use the attachment to fitting on the rod just above the reel stem. Will pobably be using the expedition cubing for yellowfin this year and was wondering how these set ups go in extended fights on lighter drag with spinners.

Sam,
To be honest i have never used one even though i do own one. The reason that i bought it was to chase the Southern Blue Fin Tuna that we get down here in Melbourne (well close to Melbourne), & that this gimble/harness was highly recommended to me by a very good source, so i will hopefully try out very soon, but yes i do believe that they are very good & worth in investing in.

is it nothing more than the usual harness for lever drag overheads or something different altogether?

Hi Sam,
You use the same harness/gimbal belt as you would for an overhead reel, attaching the harness release clips to the rings on the spinning reel strap. Here is a photo of Braid's Reel Rest, which works by passing one leg of the strap through the other leg.
