Title: Remote Pilbara Easter
Post by: Jay Burgess on April 12, 2009, 01:51:45 PM
Just spent a couple of days in a very remote part of the Pilbara. Was our first time there and much of it was an exploratory trip, trying to find good spots and familiarising ourself with the area. Managed a few good GTs, also spent a bit of time jigging for reefies. Can't wait to go there again  ;D

Jay, looks like you had a good Easter.
I noticed that you are using the PD Master Bombs, what are your thoughts on them?

Myself & a few others used them recently @ Bugatti, very strong, cast very well, easy to work, paint held together well, will be using them again.

Would still like to hear what you think of them.

PS: I will also get back to you with accom details for Hamilton once i chat to Duncan.

No complaints here Brock, I quite liked them. Easy to work and had good presence in the water. Not quite as easy as a GT2 but they have a bigger cup so that's to be expected.

Great work Jay, looks like you've found yourself some new spots :)  How remote are we talking?  You camp on the boat or go landbound?

About 250km round trip, slept on the boat due to the tides.

Tom,

The Lucanus jigs are generally aimed at bottom dwellers up to 15kg. But this doesn't limit them to all levels of the water column and much bigger fish - because we continue to catch fish anywhere in the water column and even Tuna of giant proportions have been landed on them! So in summary, they have quality Owner hardware but are not designed for anglers targeting huge fish with reef wrenching and jigging drags. I do suggest if you want to do such jigging, upgrade the hooks to a heavier gauge such as an Owner SJ-41/51 to suit the size of the jig.

This is easily done - if you can't do it yourself let me know and I can upload some instructions.

Yeah mate we have, regularly get jigs back with straightened hooks and broken assists. Easily fixed with a hardware upgrade which we will be doing from now on.

cheers for the help guys, we have tried afew upgrades but didnt get the same bite rate as the standard hooks, maybe using hooks that are too large! will try the Owner SJ-41/51.

Good Report and some great fish well done.
I just used a Lucanus Jig in Fiji and it got smashed constantly until it was barely recognisable, great jig!

Nice fish and good clean, sharp shots Jay - always a pleasure to see images that do the fish justice.
