 Hi Guys

  Looking seriously at buying a Ripple Fisher GT79R. The specs suggest this rod is comfortable with both Stickbaits and Chuggers up to around 160 grams. Just wondering what chuggers would be suitable with this rod? Could you use the 150g Cuberas or E cup Hammerheads etc? Any info would be great.

Regardless of the brand , rods designed specifically for stickbait will not work well with BIG chuggers and the rods designed for BIG CHUGGERs will not work well for stickbait , however there are rods which will work both stickbaits n smaller chuggers quite well .

Jon is spot on.
The 79R is essentially a mid-weight popper rod and it will work the 150g Cubera and E Cup fine. I wouldn't go beyond an E Cup though! It isn't a stickbait rod and while it would be fine for casting Orion Bigfoots around, it really isn't ideal for surface stickbaits.

Hi Brandon ,

Would you think this Ripple 79R is the equivalent of Carpenter SP80M which is an improved version of SP79M for use with stickbait as well as it's primary function as chugger rod .

I have SP80M but used SP79M a lot in the past , I believe SP80M has just a little softer at the tip that help it to be able to work 150 gr. stickbait while SP79M is comfortable to work on  100 gr. to 150 gr. chugger only , for this versatility I prefer SP80M due to the fact I used stickbait more and more than chugger nowaday and if I do use chugger , it's going to be a lighter one .
