Title: Landbased popping rod.
Post by: Mat Selwyn on August 27, 2009, 10:49:14 AM
Hi guys,
Looking at suggestions for a good landbased popping rod, any budget. Would like to purchase locally if I can. I generally fish PE 3-6 which may be bit much of a range for one rod so something in the higher end would be best. I currently use a home built Hastings URS86xh which is great for stickbaits and small faced poppers, and have a Daiwa Monster Mesh for heavier stuff which I want to upgrade. Blank suggestions would be great also as I dont mind building the rest. Will match it up to a trusty blue 10000 stella (which I am getting a larger spool for also) and two peice would be prefered for travelling.
Look forward to hearing your suggestions, cheers guys.

The first thing is Mat.....Is what you can get easily here in AUS and also in a reasonable price.

I would probably look at the Saltiga's for what you want.
The Saltiga 86GT would be worth a look.....I like that length 8'6 for popping as I still find the rod easy to cast and pop effectively with.Longer rods sure will give you more casting distance but I find them uncomfortable to pop with for long periods of time....The 8'6 can fish PE8 no worries.
For the lighter PE 4-6 the Saltiga 80TN is a very nice rod....bit shorter at 8ft but I still get good distance and its a very comfortable rod to pop with.
I do have a Zenaq 'Defi Muthos' (which I purchased through Fishhead) which is 9'6 rated up to PE 5.
This is a fantastic rod and I love using it for spinning metals at the longtails and Mackeral but when it comes to throwing poppers I still prefer the shorter Saltiga 80TN.

Even the Saltiga's arent cheap retailing for around $700 now....but you see them pop up for sale quite regularly on the forums.....Grab one.

Totally agree with Peter Morris on the saltigas....

I know there are a few Hots Gipang 83H which would suit in a few local tackle stores in NSW. PM for more details. Good luck Blue.

For land based popping , a longer rod is desirable . In the past Carpenter used to have one which is over 10' in overall length but this product was discontinued long ago due to limited demands . Carpenter HL TN87 is worth looking , rated PE 5~6 , this rod can cast 40 gr. ~ 80 gr. lures a long way and the bigger brother of this rod , LR88 is for PE 6~8 line , cast 80 gr. ~ 125 gr. lures beautifully .

As for other brands ; UFM used to have a few long rods in 2 pcs. configuration but these too have been discontinued albeit some are still around in the secondary / used market . Shimano used to have Ocea GT rod that is around 10' long , not sure if they are still being produced .

Thanks for the replies guys.
I have looked seriously at the saltiga range and just wondered if they were a bit heavy. Being used to the hastings they felt heavy anyway. Will be takng my time on this purchase, hopefully get around the counrty a bit and check out some gear in person if thats gonna be possible.
For LB popping I think 8'6'' will probably be the limit I can fish properly. Would love to get my hands on a long reef to check out. Does Nomad have a retail outlet or are they just online? (I'll check what their website says)
Thanks again folks

Thanks heaps for the links to the second hand rods. Both of them have me thinking differently already

Ahhh, just posted a long reply, connection conked out....

Matt, a buddy from here in SA just spent a month round Quobba (sp ) and came back blown away by your fishery for LBG, and with 4 dead reels, ( overhead SL30's ) and has finally been convinced that spinners, good ones are the way to go!! Bought himself a Stella 10K FA on return and I'm now busy helping him find a stick to match it... he's heading back as soon as he can... the images I've seen of your guys fishing is insane!

A few more recommendations from my side, both from Ocean Revolution:

Light set up: Black Devil 100 - 8'8" in length, PE 4-6, fighting drag of 8 kilos and max of 10... this rod can chuck lures from 50 to 120 grams a mile and a half... great for small metals, skipping plugs, chisel noses, small poppers and stickbaits like SMith Baby Runbohs etc.... Also available as a blank if you wanna build up yourself.

Heavier Set Up: GT Explorer Pathfiner - 8'5" in length, PE 8 to 10, fighting drag of 10 and up to 12 or 14 kilos... Lures up to 150 or 180 grams ( don't have the specs on hand ) This long cast model is a machine for stickbaits, small to medium chuggers/poppers and casts a mile or more...but has masses of power in reserve for turning fish and getting them outta the way of your ever present sharks...

Both rods built in conjunction with Smith Ltd, so of serious quailty, incredibly light, and beautifully built. Both rods are Butt Joint.

Hope this helps a little, or gives ya a few more options.

Cheers
Nepps

Another vote for the LR88, this is a very versatile rod and casts a mile.

Thanks again guys.
The secondhand rods from the forums are probably just eaither side of what I'm after. The first a bit light and the second might be a bit long and heavy. (just for me)
Focusing on the long reef and that black devil sounds about right also.

Mate Quobba is one of the most unforgiving land based spots I have fished. One scarey place, esp if you're anywhere near that bottom ledge :o Good luck to your mate when he heads back. Make sure he takes heaps of some fat spare braid ;)

Mat

From his stories, it certainly seems pretty damn gnar!!! I think the first day they hooked 32 fish, and landed 2... SHarks and stones took the rest.... hectic!! Dunno if they were at Quobba itself, but that area... They were fishing 0.55 Mono and got their asses whupped!

He's busy stockpiling proper gear now in preparation for the next trip!

Good luck with the rod search... Let me know if you need help tracking a Black Devil, I've got a few in stock.

I take it you (Andre) and Mat are talking about Quobba Station in the North-West? Mat, Have you had any luck on GTs in the area?

Yeah Quobba Station I meant, bout 90ks north of Carnarvon in WA. Closer to your home territory Jay rather than mine.
There are the odd GT there amoungst the Gold Spot, bigguns too.

Yep fewer numbers than further north but they're usually trucks... would love to have a crack at them one day. Heaps of coastline to explore.

Yeah buddy, thats the place... I have no real knowledge of exactly where it is, but I know its in that part of the world.... Cliffs, lots of Sharks and insane land based fishery...

His main targets were Mackeral, Spaniards I guess you guys call them, Longtail Tuna and they got a couple solid Prodigal Son's/Cobia as well as the odd YFT.... hooked up a few GT's but got SMOKED on the gear they had...

Seems an amazing part of the world!

Sure is  ;D That landbased stuff looks a bit too insane for me  :o But I'd love to explore that coastline in a boat when the swells not crazy huge.

Hi Mat

A good rod to consider would be the Zenaq Defi Muthos 100HHH (GT Spec). This is a 10 foot rod designed specifically for landbased GT popping. It suits PE4-8 and lures in the 110-210g range. It is light but very powerful and ideal for big GT's, Spaniards and so on. If this seems too much gun for what you are after, then Zenaq do a range of rods in lighter specifications in the 10 and 11 foot lengths, several of which we have in stock at the moment (including the GT rod). The Saltigas are quite nice too with plenty of versatility in the boat, but for serious landbased work, nothing beats a bit of length in my opinion.

Cheers
