Title: popper reel
Post by: Marc Vandaele on August 29, 2010, 05:13:31 PM
hi
i know that everyone go for high speed reel like stella 10000-18000 or dogfight
but is it not possible to do this with a 20000 or...
bcse it's not for every day or regular fishing to GT,only 2 times a year on holiday :'(
does this make realy much different in practice and catching
why you need a high retrieve?can you make this not up with faster winding...
thanks
marc

You can certainly pop for GT with a Stella 20000 but as you say it is not the ideal reel. In fact I keep the spare 16000 spool for my old Stella 20000 loaded with PE8 casting braid as a back up for my Dogfight.

I find stickbaits are really hard to work properly with a reel as low geared as a Stella 20000, but you should find working big faced poppers just fine.

thanks Mark
if i understand well,it's better to have 1 from each
18000 for big 200(fullscale's or similar)
and 20000 for stickbaits and pencil's
it's niece to find a site and fisherman like here to find your way when you need to start and need help, even when it's down under ;D
i go this winter to Oman for my first GT trip but i am already looking forward to visit australia and new-zealand for a long fishing vacation over 2 or 3 years....

Actually Marc, in my view it is the other way around with stickbaits and chuggers...... I find stickbaits very hard to work with a Stella 20000 but you can work big faced chuggers OK. For stickbaits I use a Stella 18000 or Dogfight, and at a lighter PE6 level, a Twinpower 12000 SW (a mighty little reel).

Others might or might not agree with that of course.
