Title: Oman Trip, What tackle to get?
Post by: Michael Rall on October 23, 2010, 06:51:21 PM
Hi there.

I'm going to be doing a 3 month trip to the Kuria Muria Islands off Oman about 100nmiles north of Salala. Ive been there once before for a month and did loads of diving and fishing. There are loads of Gt's there. most that i saw are bigger fish 30 - 45kgs and a few 60s every now and again. when you re freediving they just swim up to you in massive shoals just to have a look. Its amazing!!!

When i was there last i only fished for them once and got burnt off after about 10Min's. About a 35kg fish.
I was just using some borrowed gear.

So I'm looking to get some of my own tackle for all kinds of fishing but if i hook a gt i want to be able to land it.
I was thinking a shimano stella 10000sw but not sure what rod to get to go with it or if there are any cheaper rod and reels that are good.

If anyone has any recommendations if i need to go heavier or its ok. Like i said gts arnt the only fish i want to catch.

Thanks in advance

Michael, I think a few of things you wrote have scared any of the guys off making a recommendation. Stating that you saw a few 60kgs fish and then making the statement that if you hook a GT, you want to be able to land it probably has a few guys thinking that you are asking the impossible.

if you want to have a chance on big GTs, you can't really buy tackle that you can use for all kinds of fishing. You need very specific tackle for this.

Brandon said it.  If you are looking at GTs at 35 kgs and above, let alone 50 kg+, you will need specialist heavy equipment.

If you are cool with that, then I am sure the recommendations will be forthcoming.

Haha. Yup i guess that was a bit to much to ask.  If i want to throw smaller poppers and try targetsome of the smaller fish, what could i use? Or would the big boys get a chomping on that aswell?
