Please help Can somebody give me an idea of the size of treble hooks to fit to poppers.
I'm getting confused, I take it depends on the size of the popper? but what size to what size popper.
-
Hi Doug, as you said it depends on the size of the popper. The 4 most common sizes I use are Owner ST76 in 4/0 & 5/0 and Gama GT recorders in 7/0 and 8/0 for the bigger poppers. Generally you want good hook exposure without weighing the lure down so much so that it affects your ability to use it effectively.
Just to add to the confusion also keep in mind that there isn't always consistency of sizes between manufacturers.

Thanks Jay is there a formula to use ie 5"or 127mm 2/0 or 3/0 7" or 178mm 6/0 etc.
-
No there is no specific formula as all poppers are shaped & weighted differently eg a pencil popper the same length as a chugger may require different size trebles. In my experience (and I'm sure a lot of other anglers will agree) is that surface stickbaits are the most important to get hook sizes right. Sometimes it just comes down to personal preference.
Also note that some manufacturers give recommendations for treble sizes, like Fullscale for example http://www.fullscalelures.com.au/lures.html (http://www.fullscalelures.com.au/lures.html)

Doug it depends on the popper Jay's comment about the maufacture is spot on most give their suggestion also a lot of the online stores also have listed the recommendation either from the manufacturer or from their own experience . Which helps big time with the japanese poppers if they dont have a english version babel fish helps a bit a.
there are 2 other options if you have a popper and dont know what to put on it call one of the a reputable stores that specialise in gt fishing the sponsers such as fishhead helped me out today when enquiring about some trebles . they will tell you what will work and will have the trebles in stock most likely or just name the popper and and ask if anybody on hear that can recomended the rigging .

Doug, you need to find a treble for a lure that has enough hook clearance to provide for clean hook-ups. If the hook is too small, the popper itself may impede a clean hook-up. You need to test the lure to make sure it will still float with the hook in question or that it doesn't get excessively weighed down. Even if the lure still floats, an excessively heavy hook for a popper, may cause it to spend too much time underwater. After each pop, the lure should come back up to the surface promptly. if you find after each pop that it takes a few seconds for the lure to come back up, your hooks are too heavy.
Finally, ensure you find trebles that are strong enough. Most people here would be using trebles like Owner ST-76s, some of us still use ST-66s, Gamakatsu Recorders and Decoy GTs.

The Lures I had in mind are the Yo Zuri SURFACE CRUISER and their SURFACE BULL their web site doen't tell you the make or size of the trebles
-
for both of those, I'd suggest you think about ST66 5/0s. You could also look at St76 4/0s but I think you'd probably stretch the friendship with both those lures if you go to the ST76 5/0s

best to put the trbles in the rubish bin and change to singles!
works very well for me! also better if you want to release fish !

Some of us like to use trebles and have found they work quite well for us as well.
Also, some lures like surface stickbaits are very sensitive to hooks and work best with trebles.

Personally I'd prefer-
Two ST66 3/O or a single ST66 4/O at the tail.
Or two Gamakatsu 22A 4/O
No hard and fast rule to correct hook size but it helps if you try casting your plugs after putting on a new hook configuration on them. Like what was mentioned above, your hook must be big enough to ensure good hook up but it must never affect the plugs intended action or make it tumble when casting. I'm very particular about casting distance and a tumbling plug will never give good distance.
