Hi Nick,

Get in touch with Jim Isherwood, Brad Bell, Jay Burgess & Zac Chilvers. All are members on this site.

Jim will be posting a report soon from a Monties trip with Mogi and Co from the week past.

Im off to the monties in Nov, I will be fishing with Blue lightning Charters as we did last year (which was awsome with many GT's, spaniards and reefies) I understand that the carpenter boys fished with Chad on blue lightning recently and had a good trip and I look forward to some pics, I have seen 1 of a 40kg spaniard taken on a stickbait!!!

As far as camping there goes the islands that we set foot on were pretty unforgiving hot dry places with some still radioactivity. Even shore based fishing is great with GT's hanging around the headlands.

You're better off leaving from Fortescue River if your boat is capable of launching there (have heard of boats up to 7.2m Ali launching ok). This considerably reduces the distance required to travel over to the islands. Permits are not required but check the DEC website for info about which islands you can camp on.

We encountered fish to 45-50kg size on our recent trip and the Carpenter boys are eager to return as fish of 50kg+ were seen but not hooked up. Stay tuned for a report.

Great work Jay and the boys - really opening some eyes i'd say... (and to Brad's previous work there amongst others).

Might have to get up there!

We usually launch at Onslow, it's a bit further to travel but we have somewhere to leave the car.

It's tough to do it on your own but can be very rewarding.
No permits to camp are necessary.
There's zero facilities available so you need to be self sufficient.
PM me if you want speciifc info.

Cheers
Kev

I'll let the photos do the talking.

Let me just add that these are some of the most experienced GT anglers in the world who regularly weigh fish of this size in Japan.

50kg is not optimistic in those grounds, last year we got 3 between 45 and 50kg and we were dusted many times. My first hook-up was from a pack of 50kg fish at trial reef, another bloke got one fish of that pack that went 50kg (his 1st GT too)

Hi Jay ,

Did you fish with Konishi-san , Ajiti-san n Mogi-san recently ? Konishi-san n Mogi-san will be visiting us this weekend and they will be speakers in our Jigging n Popping Seminar in Jakarta . They are indeed some of the most experienced GT anglers in the world and I learned from then in the early 2000' but still hope to learn some more this weekend .

Best regards : Jon .

You were invited Luke hahaha  and yes fortescue is by far the best option, The ramp at Fortescue is painful ( launching between the mangroves) and anything above a 5 metre boat needs a high tide to launch and retrieve and you have have to cross another river bed before you get to the Fortescue ramp!! Pm me anyone who needs more info on Fortescue and i will send you my phone number !!

And a 50kg Gt is do-able guys !!!! we saw them and were busted off 3 times in 20 minuets !!! pic below from last week out there .

Thanks to Brad bell for planting the original seed .

I am heading to the Monte's next year.

What would you guys say was the most effective popper for the time you were there?

I have heard that a few Sebile Splasher 190's are worth taking.

Cheers,

Chris

Just got back from this years trip to the monte's GT's were a little slow compared to last year but there were still a few around, my best went about 20kgs with the biggest being around 35kg. Plenty of fish sighted and hooked but not that many landed, one of the best parts of the trip was a big pack of GT's that rushed the boat, 3 hookups and two fish came off that but my lure was in 3 different fishes mouths but I couldnt wind fast enough to set the hooks and they were gone as quick as they showed up.
Quite a few macks around that relieved me of some lures including a virginal hammerhead only three casts old.
Discovered my MC Works 777 doesnt have the nuts to turn a GT but I expected that.
Plenty of fish on jigs but also alot of sharks around that made it harder to get fish up in tact.
When I get some quality pics I will post them or Les or others on the trip may help out.

Kyle
