Title: Daiwa Saltiga Dogfight for Jigging.
Post by: Jason Lai on December 30, 2011, 01:25:07 AM
Hi, I'm a newbie to heavy jigging. Obviously, Dogfight reel is for heavy popping purposed. Has anyone tried on heavy jigging around (400-500 gram) instead? Need some advised. Thanks !

Hi Jason,
DF is not suitable for jigging. Its high gear ratio (6,2:1) for jigging will tear you down even you're RAMBO....

And it's to heavy to use for long periods of time.

I would suggest you definitely do not do that Jason. As Jeffry says, the gearing will kill you.

With heavy 400-500 gram jigs, I guess you will setting up with PE5 or PE6 line?  Rather than a Dogfight have a look at the specialist heavy jigging reels: Stella SW20000 or Daiwa Saltiga Expedition (or the new Saltiga 6500 slow gear version).

If physical weight is a consideration, then a Twinpower 8000 PG or Stella JDM 10000 PG fitted with an aftermarket 12000 or 16000 spool is a very good lighter option. The larger spool gives you enough line capacity. For example, I often use a Twinpower 8000 PG fitted with a Twinpower 12000 spool with PE5 for jigging weights from 400 to 600 grams.

I'm looking into the Stella 10000 PG fitted with an aftermarket 16000 for winter jigging next year, the JM spool looks rad! with a JM power knob + spool that thing would be bling king lol
