Title: Orion lures
Post by: Fraser Simpson on February 11, 2008, 07:41:55 PM
Guys,

I have read good things about the ORION French made lures on this and other forums. Are they available in Oz?

I am travelling to the UK/Europe in June 08. I guess it would be cheaper and easier to get hold of a few over there, but I do like to support local traders if I can source them here.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Fraser ???

Fraser - there is no distributor for Orion lures in Australia. Those of us who use them source them directly from the maker, Eric le Guyader. How many are you looking for and which models do you want? It's expensive if you only want a couple due to the postage costs. If you're only looking for a couple, I might be able to spare them depending on the model you want.

Thanks Brandon,

A very kind offer. I particularly like the look of Magic Pop 175 and CX 165 in the poppers and Crazy Dogs in the stickbaits. I will definately get some delivered to my parents in the UK, and then bring them back (postage much cheaper). If any of you regulars want me to get some I'll pick them up for you at cost - not in europe till June though.

I don't use the magic Pop or the CX165 but I do have a Crazy Dog right in front of me. I haven't used this yet although I understand from Eric that it is a floating stickbait.

Thanks for the offer on the lures but I have ample stock currently.

Brandon,

Me and Stephen (the Cairns bommie basher) have had good results in the Cairns area on the Nomad/Blackjack range of lures especially the 150 Amano popper and the 100/150 wahoo stickbaits, but I love the look of the Orion Crazy Dog. The lure looks very similar to one I used to use successfully in England (Pike Frenzy) for freshwater Pike up to 15kg. I never though that the action looked particularly realistic (an erratic lazy roll), but I caught the trophy fish in 3 consecutive tournements when everyone else used livebaits, so I would be definately fishing with confidence using the Crazy Dog. Do you contact Eric directly?
Also if you have any Orions to sell can you PM me?

Cheers,

Fraser

Hi Mick,

I've got the Cono Cono, Big Jim, Fraser and T-Rex as well as Big Numbas and some Bigfoots, I'll try shoot some pics and give you some specs on them for tomorrow.

One thing I can defintely say about these lures, they are built TOUGH!!!! Defintely hand made without the perfect shainy holofoil finish of alot of other baits, but they are frickin tough!

that Big Nambas with David Boue Madil in the photo - you should see how bad it looks now!!

Brandon - No doubt if it lives with David, by now its probably been thrashed totally and completely!!!

I have to admit, its one of the ugliest lures I've ever seen in my life, but there is something about it that just says BIG FISH... and if David and the LPB boys use them, there defintely has to be something said for them....

I've not fished any of mine yet, apart from the 140 Bigfoot, but am looking forward to sending them down some GT, Yellowfin and whatever else will eat them's throats!

Orions are great lures. They don't look much compared to something like a Craftbait but their effectiveness has been proven time and again. The Bigfoot is one of my favourite lures. I've got them in every size from 140 to 230

they're not indestructible, believe me. Just ask Paul Chan or Malcolm Crane!   ;)  ;D

The website was out of date years ago - there are none of his more current lures on it

Hi Guys,

Mick as requested here are some pics to show sizes etc... I don't have an accurate scale to give weights, and my Big Jim is "on loan" to a mate, but I'm sure you can get an idea of its size from the other images comparing to here.

Lastly a length comparison with a Wahoo 125:

Hope this helps a bit....

Brandon - I agree that no lure is indestructable..... I don't think such a thing exists... ;D But they ceratinly feel tough as nails and very solid....

Orions are extremely resilient against bite marks but will shatter against a hard object. Of course, you're not supposed to cast them against something they would shatter on........

And after that I'll be even less inclined!!!  ;D

Mick, you need a very strong popping rod for Big Jim and Conocono. That's why you need a Fire Vortex or SP78UHL.
Title: Re: Orion lures
Post by: Chris Young on April 30, 2009, 05:20:01 PM
Brandon....Mick could also use a BG Jack instead of Fire Vortex
Title: Re: Orion lures

actually, when you look at the build integrity of a Fisherman, I have to agree with that. Mick, forget the previous post - I think you should turn your mind to a Fisherman BG Jack

And no Mick...I don't think there is anyone out there wanting to sell a BG Jack  :P

Brandon - Does that mean I'm going to give myself a hernia chucking these on my DJ83MH?  :o ;D

Oh well, nothing like a good excuse to look for another rod....  8) Its a little like putting the cart before the horse, buying the lures first, then the rod to use for it, but who ever said us tackle tarts were sane anyway....  :P
Title: Re: Orion lures
Post by: Brandon Khoo on April 30, 2009, 07:11:40 PM
bloody hell, you want to use a 230g Big Jim with a DJ83MH?   :o
Not much is going to happen when you try to pop that lure. What you need is a BG Jack!!
Title: Re: Orion lures
Post by: Andre van Wyk on April 30, 2009, 07:20:12 PM
Oh well.... I guess I'll be hunting for a new rod then Brandon....  ???
For the moment I'll just use the smaller Orions or pop really  s   l   o   w   l   y  ...... 8)

The DJ works wickedly with smaller poppers and pencils and stickbaits for me right now, and big GT country is still a couple months away for me...that'll give me some time to hunt own a rod worthy of the Big Jim!

(http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd207/bunzo51/Smileys/rofl.gif) no thanks, I just recone Mick and Neps need one.

PS: Replacing my 'Big Foot' losses from Bugatti comes before a new rod ;D [and not a BG Jack] :D

You're all going to need to be quick at this rate as Fisherman are going to run out of BG Jack blanks!

Brandon,

Just got my Big Jim back, and its not the 230 gram version... its the "baby" at 180 grams.... still probably be a little heavy for the DJ, but alot better than the 230 gram version!

Andre - get the 230g one and a BG Jack to use it with!

It was a shared order Brandon - can't afford so many lures these days!

Got myself the Big Jim 230s and the GT monster. Wish the cup of the lure was deeper. Looks a little flat.

Hi ,
I would like to know where you ordered them from, most shops appear to be out of stock.
