Title: Shoreline Mahimahi off the rocks
Post by: Nathan Tsao on January 29, 2012, 12:01:20 AM
Big Bull Mahi landed from right behind my workplace yesterday afternoon. Lucky we live Hawai'i !!!!!!
It hit a 3.5oz Blurple SuperStrike Popper at about 110m cast with a Lamiglas 1322L blank and Van Staal 275 reel.
Awesome fight, cartwheeling out of the water and making good runs. Fortunately my friend had a gaff; it was hard to land the fish in the heavy surge pounding on the rocks.

Also a 25-27lb GT from the exact spot two days earlier on the same lure

Very nice Nathan and well done.  About 15 kgs?  I have had a few land-based Mahimahi but only little 3-5 kg jobs.

Mate that is a cracking effort, that would have looked awesome jumping around so close to shore.
Are mahi a regular capture from shore over there?

I think it's a rare event even for the Big Island.  I have personally seen them pass through a few times and hooked into one at Makapuu Ohau shore casting.  Mind you that was over a year of throwing plugs every day at sunrise before the kids went off to school.   I have read stories about huge bait schools and preditors like Ahi in chase visible from shore in days long past.  These have been netted down to small infrequent seasonal baitfish schools.

This is a cool video of a guy getting a Ahi from shore on a Saltiga lure west side of Oahu.
