Hi Guys,
For me personally, part of the fun of a fishing trip is the planning. What rods, reels, lures, etc should i bring.... So many questions....
I am curious where is everyone headed to for their next trip and what made you want to go there?
WHERE:
Montebello Islands - July 2012.
WHY:
I have read several reports on the Monties over the last couple of years and it it holds great appeal due to the natural beauty of the area in general and the huge variety of fish the area holds. While it is not the cheapest trip going, the price was attractive also. I will be fishing with Blue Lightning.
What do you have planned?
Chris

Great idea for a post.............
Exmouth WA August 2012
We drive the 1800km North every year to chase Marlin and reef species. Last year we started popping and we will be doing alot more this year.
Can't wait!!!!!
-
Norther Bugatti reef, April 2012
A Christmas present, lazy mans trip with very little planning required other than tackle.
-
Three Kings 30th March. Then Chesterfield Reef 24th August. The former we go each year same group of guys. The Chesterfield trip because it is essentially unexplored and we were offered an option to go.
-
Lots of days trips, but I guess those don't count for this purpose.
Next multi-day specific GT trip will be South Lombok for 3 days in April.
Why? Because it is stunningly beautiful and under-fished.
-
Just got back from Fiji recently. Next trip sadly not until September, but am taking my Dad on a 10 day drive up trip from Cairns to Bligh Reef via Princess Charlotte Bay with the Nomad crew.
10 days fishing plus quality time with the old man, can't wait.
-
End of April a 10 day trip to Saint Brandon and the Soudan Banks.
6 days of popping, jigging en general fishing (flyfishing will be attempted as wel) followed by 3 days/nights of trolling/jigging on the banks and a shot at swordfish.
Research and planning started a year ago since it is pretty much DIY, need to see for ourselves if the fishing is as good as they say :)
Serge.
-
For me it will be a trip to Lakshadweep (laquedives), starting March 26, 28 at 7:00, first POPPER in water and at 7:10, the first GT in the boat, the dream is very important for a fisherman. ;)
Why
Because I know the Boss of the fishing center and I think that the Lakshadweep is like the Maldives where I'm already gone and fishing with Popper is my cup of tea :)

Was waiting for you to post that one Jay. Im jealous mate. Awesome destination.

Hallaniyat definitely seems to be the flavour of the year at the moment. I can't believe I am actually going twice this year!
Jay, you are so right that GT destinations are almost invariably of great natural beauty. But then there are the rusty Malaysian oil rigs ::) .
-
End of April this year for four days at Stanage Bay Central Queensland for my Bucks(stag) party. For the unfamiliar, its in the Shoalwater Bay region.
Nine guys, three 7 metre trailer boats, lots of popping, lots of beer and crabs and lots of bullshit!!
I have hired a shed for the outragous sum of $10 per night each. Sleeps nine, has a gas BBQ and refrigeration!!
I'll do a trip report after its over!!
Ken

There are some real monsters lurking around those rigs in the east coast of Malaysia but such trips are not for the faint hearted.
Doing Hallaniyat next week. Hope the weather's good and the GTs are biting ;D

Please tell me more about these Malaysian rigs. I have contacts in the region.

Ben, I will leave that one to Chris or some of our other Singapore/Malaysia members. I have only seen the pics - never been out there.

Where
Did my first ever GT trip last year with Nomad to Bugatti reef in August 2011 organized by Brandon and fished with a bunch of wonderful MCA guys. This year July 2012 uncharted waters further north with Nomad and the MCA guys.
Why
When you have such a wonderful and hardworking organizer like Brandon and the knowledge of the Nomad team and a bunch of great guys you cant go wrong ;D ;D
-
I've been to these rigs twice a few years back. The boats heading there are pretty basic. One of the boats sank on one trip out while being towed to the rigs.
You'll need to have a commando style modus operandi, all lights out while getting into the rigs at night. And you're tied to one of the legs of the rigs while you jig or pop. Once the patrol boats come, you need to untie and get your boat out of the area quickly - like a cat and mouse game. As if GT fishing is not exciting enough.....
Please tell me more about these Malaysian rigs. I have contacts in the region.
-
WHERE:
Friday after next = Swains / Coral Sea for 10 Days.
WHY:
GTs, Wahoo, Mackerel, & Tuna - Surface Fish :)
-
Except for the sinking boat bit, that sounds like a fun adventure Chris :).

Any idea who the rigs belong to and could you share the location? If they are Petronas rigs I may be able to pull some strings and get security clearance for trip out there.
-
I think off the coast of Terrenganu Ben, although there are also some in Sabah and Sarawak as well I think.
-
The ones I've been to are located off the coasts of Sarawak and Brunei. I know some are managed by Shell - not too sure which ones are managed by Petronas. But if you do get a chance to fish these rigs, there's every chance of monster class gts and I've seen pictures of mega gts.
Problem there is how to stop them from getting into the rigs and bust you off. It's an interesting location and I believe the gts there love big eye jacks. We'll hook these jacks and the gts will come and tax them
-
Thankful for those rigs....otherwise, those Mega GT would probably not exist!

You keen on a trip if I can arrange clearance? I've got a heap of friends in KK and Sarawak and should be able to pull some strings. Maybe even bring the big boy and his cameras, would make a great episode.

Kanimbla Charters.
Weather is looking very average from next Friday so far :(
20-25 knots!
-
Chris,
Apologies for the delay - Blue Lightening, same as you i think. Keep me posted on how you do, lures that works etc. We have a trip with just 4 of us going, so it should be fairly comfortable one guy is making it his first ever GT trip, so that should be fun in itself.
-
Ill keep you updated mate.
-
G'day Ben,
Hope the weather improves for your trip.
A couple of years ago I did some analysis of about 20 years of records in Central Qld to look at days under 10-15 knots.
From memory Februaury was the worst with only 2 or 3 days under 15knts, March April weren't much better then things inproved May June July to about 10 or 12 days. I think Sept was the best at 21 days , then went downhill to December around 10 days and worst still till Feb.
I suggest you buy a tight fitting hat with a chin strap and maybe even a coffeee mug with a lid.
However the weather has been better than average so far this year. Kanimbla is a good boat with a great reputation so you'll be fine. (cast with the wind)
-
Southern Oman - next week :) :) :) :) :)
First GT trip.
Bugatti - July
Invited by friend.
-
Great idea for a post Chris!
My next trip is to Shoalwater bay, but its been cancelled so many times now due to bad weather or airforce bombing practice...hope to hit it in the next month or so.
Does anyone know when Nomad are starting their operations there this year?
Stew
