Looks like an awesome trip.
The size of the fish you encountered land based popping is very impressive.
I look forward to going there soon!
-
311 GTs in 6 days! Is that a mis-print?
Some lovely, healthy looking fish there. Love the land-based stuff. Impressive and very well done. Thanks very much for sharing.

Ugh! i was invited to go to Christmas Island last week, but couldn't make it because of a flyfishing trip to Moloka'i. Now i wish i went to X-mas instead, HOLY CRAP!

Hi Mark,
Sorry, I put bit wrong info.
Total days are 12.
The first group: 6days, 18th Jan - 23rd Jan
The second group: 6days, 25th Jan - 30th Jan
Because of lots number we cought, there were 5 GT experts, including 2 Carpenter testers and captain Fukui-san.

Thanks Taniy. That's still an average of nearly 30 GTs per day...... superb effort.

Fantastic trip Taniy!!
Bring on Tuesday!
I'll say hi to the guides for you.
Were there many yellowfin and did anyone get a dogtooth?
Mark,
On our best days last year 40-60 GT's were boated between 4 anglers. When you find the big schools the gts hit almost every cast. 3 casts without a fish and you ask the guide to go around and re-start the drift!
Cheers
Duncan

Nice work Taniy. See you and Fukui-San in 3 weeks ;)

Hi Duncan,
I saw some yellowfin school, but we ignored because we are GT fishing nuts!
We did not get any doggy. Maybe it was not the season?
Hi Luke,
Yeah, see you in 3 weeks and talk about GT expedition!

Wow what a trip! love the pic with the guy in the water and his pole submerged, you know your having fun when you just throw your pole in the water to take a pic lol!

We have just returned from Christmas Island with Duncan from Fishhead. Highlights were a few days of exceptional popping 30-40 gt landed between 4 anglers per day. Plus a 65kg bar cod 2 +45kg YFT more wahoo bite offs than landed. Also Fantastic jigging. Great destination.

Hey guys, have always thought about trying out X'mas Island but have had mixed reviews about the place. Was told the weather is very unpredictable and only one small area of the island is fishable due to the boat's limited range. Was also told that there's up to 90% chance of being sharked when trying to land your catch. I know that jigging can be productive there but never knew popping can be that fantastic (at least from the posts above).
For those with good fishing experience there, would be great if you can share your thoughts on the comments mentioned above. Btw, are the popping grounds far off or totally located at a different area from the jigging ones? Also greatly appreciate if you can share some contacts of good charter operators via PM. Cheers!
