Not longer than 7ft 9in for those lures you could look at:

Carpenter LGM SP78H (if you can find one)
Carpenter Monster Hunter 79 XH
Ripple Fisher GT 78 Flex

Hi Peter, Hammer Head E-cup is a smallish popper and I mainly use PE6 and a Carpenter EP85/36 for E-Cup but this is a lot longer than you are looking for. I think the best option is the Hots 77XH, Hots 79XH and possibly 75XXH. If the rod you get has a fast action or is to "stiff" you going to have the lure jumping a lot and also casting distance is reduced. My theory is to use a slightly longer softer rod so when you pull the popper it holds the water and is a slower longer action. Also remember Hammerheads push more water than a traditional bloop so you want longer slower pulls on the rod to get it working properly. It is like a golf swing you got to get a good rhythm otherwise does not work to well.

Hope it helps.

Cheers,
Nick

Peter,

In the Carpenter forum you said you had or had access to an SP78H. What's wrong with that if all you want it for is an E cup Hammerhead?

If you want a rod to handle a bigger variety of lures and weights. That's a different question.

Peter,

I'm 56. I'll let you in on a secret, Voltaren 50mg soluble.

Don't leave home without it.

Actually, in all seriousness I think that if you have the right rod, balanced nicely with how you fish even us oldies don't have a real problem using big poppers, particulalrly in short bursts. I wouldn't want to spend all day pulling an I cup for no reason, but in the right place at the right time....

SP78H possibly.

But all three will do the job very nicely.

Bloody hell Nick... EP85/36 for an E-Cup  :o :o  The tip will surely just fold?

I use EP 85/36 for 120-140 gram stickbaits!   :P

Howzit Mark, When I first rigged up the EP85/36 with the E-Cup and also use the Cubera 125gr or skipjack. I was not to sure it was going to work and was messing around but it has turned out to be my secret weapon and have caught a lot of great fish on this set up with poppers. I like fishing my poppers slow and with this set up I fish out of the belt and because the rod has a slower taper you give the popper a long pull and moved the popper a long way. Creates a ripping effect in the water. The best part is it casts a mile!!

This clip I made for the EP85/36 and PE6 but all the fish are caught on Cubera 125gr or skipjack. The biggest was 144cm so works for big and small. Also the 60kg YFT I got in Hallaniyat Last year was on the EP and a skipjack.

This was the fish I got at Latham on the same rig but using an E-Cup! For me this is the best popping rod for 130gr range lures I have ever used and can handle big fish. Next time in Southern Oman worth a try especially were you casting in open water. It goes against logic but it is one of those thing that just works and I don't query it to much!

Lifting the fish up from under the boat on the EP85/36, this rod is a legend!

Sorry lost this picture so took it off the Hammerhead site so a bit branded.

Good on you Nick!

An E-Cup is big compared to a Cubera 125 or a Skipjack. If the E-Cup works for you with EP 85/38 then very well done!  ;D

Similar sizes the poppers but both work well on the EP85/36 and a bit different to the norm of shorter popping rods so an option if someone is looking for one rod to cover both medium popper and sticks if they willing to give it a try and work on a slightly different way of working poppers.

It all depends on where the "lock" point is and how many "phases" of action a particular rod can have.

I was surprised, out of sheer necessity during a hot bite - regarding the performance of the E-Cup on the FCL Extreme 81. It performs admirably, however, you do need to pick your popper type - E-Cups were great, however, the deeper cup of a 150g CraftBait GT-3, not so much for obvious reasons.

The tip absorbs some of the direct action given to the lure which in turn, minimizes certain lures from jumping or spitting out of the water.

I have a brand new condition Carpenter LGM SP78H that I am looking to post up for sale very soon.  If you want it please PM me, please be prepared though, a rod this rare and discontinued will not go cheap.
