Title: RF 79 reversal or Carpenter coralviper 79/40
Post by: Arnout Weber on June 17, 2014, 04:57:01 AM
Hello,

What would be your choice for PE 8 line and popper to 130gr and stick baits up to 150gr.
When you have to choose between the RF 79 reversal or the Coral viper 79/40?

I wand to use a Saltiga 6500H on it. Or would a Stella 10000 with SOM 16000 spool be better.

Best regards,

Arnout.

Hi Arnout,
I will paired with a 6500H or equivalent which is an 18000 Stella, keep that SOM spool out of the equation  ;)

Arnout,

I can't speak for the Coral Viper, but the RF 79R is a very nice "all-around" rod for poppers to 150gms and slightly larger for stickbaits-I love mine.  Probably more of a heavy PE8 than the rated PE10.

They can be rated the same but one is softer than the other,
it all depends on the angler fishing style and what he intend to use for (stickbait or Popper).

How do you discripe a fishing style?

My intention is to use it with poppers between 100 and 150 gr.
I have a RF 78flex for poppers up to 180gr and a Infinity light for
stick baits up to 160gr.

So i think i have a nice collection with this extra rod to cover a lot
of situations.

Best regards,

Arnout.

If you are going to poppers at 150 grams, the CV 79/40 will begin to struggle a bit.

I think what my choose is going to be.
I have seen video,s of both rods and the CV looks a little bit softer.
I think the Gt79reversal is the right choice for me.

Hi Sami, just curious, have you had a bad experience with a SOM spool?

Hi Andy,
Yes I personally own one, where the spool is literally done with not much drag left, it defiantly need service and on another note the drag is not that smooth at all with a bit of seizing during the fight reminding me of the Saltiga, I've seen it failing on clients on different occasions.
the lip is another problem per comparison to the original or the Yumeya spool, I can't justify the cost only to add 10% or 15% line capacity and gain a bit of bling bling, so far nothing beats the original or the Yumeya spool in my opinion.

Sorry for diverting the thread guys.

Interested in your experiences with SOM spools Sami as you put a lot more hours on the gear than most.

I own 1 x 18000 and several 16000, they have performed flawlessly to date, but I do home service the drag stacks after a couple of trips. I do agree the 18000 is really a bling piece as there is no extra capacity advantage over the very reliable stock shimano and yumeya spools. I like to use the 8000-10000 reel a lot so the 16000 has a capacity advantage only for me. No issues with the drag or casting / lip to date but I shall certainly update on any issues.

x 2 what Andy says really.

Two of the three biggest GTs I have ever caught came in on SOM 16000 spools without issue.  I do make a point of home servicing the drag stack after each decent fish. On the oldest SOM 16000 I have, one Carbontex washer has been replaced.

I do agree that the 18000 SOM adds nothing.  I do use the SOM 20000 on a Stella 18000 for some extra capacity when using PE10.

Will be interesting to get hands on one of the new SOMs. These have been available in Japan for a few months now so I would imagine the usual western outlets will have them soon.
