wich size reel?
December 02, 2009, 10:22:46 PM
hi guys, just a little confused here and looking for some advice.looking for a spinning reel to go on a jigwrex s526 and intend to fish p.e.6/80lb.cant afford top shelf and am just starting out in jigging :) looking at the spheros, saragosa in the shimano stable and the saltist in the daiwa stable {any other suggestions are welcome}.....anyhow the size of reel is more confusing than the make/model.was really leading towards the saltist but not sure on what size,i thought the 6000-6500 would be the go,but any tips on either size or make/model would be great. thanks.

Hi Gav

Most people go for the larger reels when fishing 80lb. There are benefits with line capacity in deep water (unless you only jig in say 40m or less), larger drag systems and gears which will be more durable for you in the long term. That said, the 14000 and 18000 in the Spheros and Saragossa have the same size bodies, so the difference there is purely capacity between the 2 sizes. The Saltist looks like being a great mid priced reel, but daiwa supplies are pretty thin on the ground until January (we have sold out and have a waiting list). The Spheros and Saragossa are both superb reels in their price range but my preference definitely goes towards the Saragossa with its upgraded drag, and the big machined handle is much more comfortable for long jigging sessions.

hope this helps

I was using a Saragossa 18000 on my Jigwrex 526 for most of the last 18months and can't fault it at all, for most of that time I had YGK Jigman PE6 [70 lb] on it and used jigs in 200-300 gram range, after all that time I found the reel had not slackened off at all and has been put in semi retirement on a Calstar medium allrounder, top value reels for shore.
