wet and wild townsville trip
February 14, 2010, 07:23:19 PM
Its been a while since we have been blessed with 5-10kn winds and yesterday wasnt any different.. The forcast started off 5-10 reaching 10-15 but by sat morning it was 10-15 reaching 15-20. We have been getting itchy feet and wanting to go for a pop, so we decided to head for the reef. we waited till sun up before departure so we could pick where the storms were and try avoid the winds that follow them :-). . well we got our 15-20 on the way out catching the edge of a storm, the seas were coming from every which direction, made it impossible to sit at a constant speed. we hit afew tuna schools on the way out with the 4pound. finaly we made it out to the reef, lucky we were in a contender :-) we had never popped in overcast rough conditions at the reef before so this was going to be a challage, bait was hard to find and it was hard to stand up in the boat. After searching afew of the bombys we found the bait about 40-50 feet on the up current of them, cast after cast we didnt even have a follow, till we changed the angle we were hitting the bait from, first cast i landed a nice 24kg fish, not bad to start the day, things were looking promising till the sun moved behind clounds and we couldnt spot the bombys till we were on top of them. managed to land afew smaller fish during the day and have a couple more strikes/hook ups. nothing to brag about but all in all it was good to get out again. the trip home was abit better as the wind dropped and the storms dissapeared.
