Bearing swivel or Split ring connection
July 05, 2010, 07:08:53 AM
I would like to know which system, you guys prefer to use to connect your popper to the leader, I have been using a ball-bearing swivel, tied to the leader wiith an AG chain knot, and this is joined to my poppers by a split ring,
The other day, a pal of mine told me, he now uses just a split ring on the end of his leader, this is attached using a Kevlar wear sleeve and crimped, he connects his lures straight to the ring, He said it is more stream-lined, and I can see the advantage of not using expensive heavy swivel, but I wonder about line twist, What do you think?

You don't need expensive ball bearing swivels for this type of stuff.  There's not that much twist with poppers/stickbaits.   Needs to be strong yes, but regular barrel swivels are fine (eg Wilson).

I use a swivel tied to the leader, then a split ring between the swivel and the lure.  Strong and simple.

Hi,
Ever tried just a solid ring, with a wear guard either in the end of a twisty or crimped to the end of your leader. Simply a pair of split ring pliers to put it onto the split ring at the front of your popper or stickbait. Ultra strong, works really well for me.
