Winga's hooked to barrel right now. Not sure if stickbait or conventional.

Either way, rolling down Friday - hope we don't miss!

Have heard that Winga dropped the fish after an epic battle. Should be off tomorrow night, hopefully will see you around there Luke, and hopefully the fish haven't moved on!

just managed to get a seat with reeltime!! cant wait for tuesday!!

Its going to be my first tuna trip and christening of the new Saltiga 80TN.

Ive only got a saragosa 18000 to put on the rod, which is currently spooled with 300m of pe6. would i be better off putting 600m of pe4, maybe tufline instead for this trip?

Hi Damian,

You will have a ball on school fish with that rod, but if you hook a barrel you will be in a spot of bother in my opinion. You've got a good casting range on that rod which is great.

I've never used the rod so I'm not too sure how much pressure you can exhert - either way both those line classes are fine for school fish but you may struggle to stop a barrel or avoid a long-overdrawn fight (which brings so many other failure factors into play).

thanks for the info luke.

I think the max drag the rod can handle would be maybe 8kgs, im inclined to set the reel at more like 6, which is why i had the idea to try to get 600 or even 700m of line on, to give some hope of landing a bigger than school size fish.

perhaps im better to leave the PE6, go really hard for as long as I can if I hook the big one and just hope for the best?

im planning to put a stella 10000 on the rod eventually, so this is a make do solution

You've picked the best day of weather for the long weekend Damian! Friday is going to be raining and blowing 25knts SSW, it'll be pretty rough out there with big swells as well.

For the school fish PE6 is more than enough. I've had a few mates land fish to 25kg out there on 16lb braid on pretty much heavy bream gear! Just make sure the rest of your charter group are understanding enough to let you fight the fish for a couple of hours if you're intending to go that light! I'd say min PE4 for the school SBT and Albacore and you'd still have half a chance at a barrel if you hook up in the shallows, out deep you're gone!

My setups consist of PE4, 6 & 8. Depending on water depth and size of fish being encountered. If you encounter a big school, my theory is that even with PE12 with a fish sounding back towards the school any bit of braid touching another fish will end in tears.

Anyway, hope they turn back on again as there was a shitload of boat traffic out there today and the bigger fish have gone missing. By the way, you might want to find out what a 'Heart' lure is, apparantly its the one Winga got hit on today before being cut off by a long liner!  ::) ::)

Damian, it was a trolled X-rap from what I've heard. Stick with smaller sized stickbaits, Daiwa Dorado Sliders, small BC gammas, small orions etc, they haven't really hit any big stickbaits yet, not saying that the big barrels won't but the school fish have ignored big offerings so far.

At this stage probably Mon & Tues as weather is looking good, not too sure yet. Fri, Sat weather looks crap with 20 knts wind and big swells, Sun looks good apart from the swell factor as well.

hi guys went down to portland on the weekend done well on lures on Saturday on sunday we were cubing and had tuna and dolphin fish around the boat caught a few on soft plastics and cubes  it is a shame i did not have the right crew on the boat to throw some poppers or stick baits around i reckon you would have had a ball they smashed the soft plastics pretty hard so you would think they would love a popper
