Poppers
November 29, 2007, 07:13:29 PM
Over past few weeks i've been slowly rounding up a small selection of poppers for my up coming trip in a months time.

On most lures i bought the trebles were crap and needed replacing but the River2sea dumbell 200 poppers actualy look like they are a pretty good solid hook. A question to anyone that has used them... Do you still need to replace these trebles on this paticular lure for chasing large GT's or are they strong enough as is?

Also just ordered myself a few Nomad Cubera's and Dogtooth stick baits to add to the collection.

I'm not sure of the standard hardware that comes with the Dumbells because i haven't bought one for 3 years! The fact of the matter is that I do not believe there is a popper/stickbait on this planet that comes ready rigged with appropriate hooks/terminals for heavy popping. Some lures sold these days may have their terminals/hooks upgraded by tackleshops that sell them - in that case it may be a different story but always check. The only terminals that I have ever seen up to the task have been split rings on Fisherman lures.

The hooks on dumbells these days are Owner ST66 4/0's.  They should be strong enough in most situations.

For big GT's retro-fit the lot!!
You don't see any Japanese stuff come with hooks or rings very often....its left to the angler.

They are Owners which are a goog hook....not a GREAT hook for consistently aiming at honker GT's

Cheers

Aaron.

I agree with stephen,

I use the dumbell's heaps due to the cost of loosing those flash Japanese jobs, I have upgraded hooks and split rings on some - if the massive GTs are about - but like Stephen says the standard fair is fine for most situations and up to 15kg drag setting -no problems.    :-\

Nice collection.........
