Exploratory Elusive Reef Drive Out 23 Jan 2011:
Nick :- Weather had eased a little from yesterday and there was moderate cloud cover which also helped us through most of today. With comfortable conditions we headed off looking for some GTs, the first couple of spots we stopped at were looking pretty decent and with plenty of bait there looked like there was going to be some decent action, and so there was. Even though fish weren't hooking up as much as we would have liked we were still seeing them which kept morale high. Kiwi Grahame managed to land a really good fish of 30 kilos just after lunch, followed by another good fish of around 28 kilos 30 mins later. We had a good spread today with a stick bait, popper and goby being used most of the day we found that the stick bait was getting most of the attention in the first half of the morning then the popper turned on and managed to lead the fish count at the end of the day. Go the Cubera 125! A few nice gold spots were also boated today along with some Mac tuna and shark mackerel. To top things off this evening a light sprinkle to cool things down.
John:- Today we headed north to make a roundabout trip to the next anchorage with the weather easing things where looking good, unfortunately the GTs were also just looking at us today, we steadily found fish at most spots we visited but failed to make a hook up, to take our minds of things a little we went into the shallows and had some entertaining light tackle action withy gold spots and a few sharkie mackerel with the odd coral trout making an appearance, to finish things off we had some more nibbles on the GT gear but they once again eluded our pointy bits on the lures, tough day at the office
Clint: Stoked to be out on the water for the first trip of the year. The weather was great and plenty of GTs were lurking around. The morning started off seeing plenty of fish just could not stick the hooks. As the day got on we started to get to get some to the boat including one really nice fish of 26kg that put up a hell of a fight. We also got some nice GTs out of some skinny water that is always fun seeing them charge around the shallows. On the slack tide we did some light tackle and found some clunker red throat that were on steroids putting up great fights on light tackle. We also got a mixed bag of gold spot ,mackerel and mac tuna. Fun day on the water.
