shimano stella 10000 or 20000?
March 07, 2008, 05:43:31 PM
G'day guys,

Im looking at getting a new shimano stella for popping mainly with  cuggers and stickbaits but are unsure whether to get the 10000 or 20000 ??? i dont have any experiance with stella's but i'm thinking the 10000 as its lighter, has a faster retreval rate and pulls more drag pressure or should i get the 20000 for its larger spool compasity better handle and bigger alround size. Also is there any difference in casting ability between the two? Would love to get some opinions from anyone with personal experiance with the two who know how they compair.

Dayne, what size fish are you after and what weight of line are you intending to fish? A 10000 has a more suitable gear ratio for popping and stickbaits but if you want to fish really heavy lines, you may need a 20000 spool. My personal suggestion is to get the right reel and if you need the spools, to get these as an after market accessory. the 10000 spool is a bit small (unless you're fishing PE6) and the 20000 spool is a bit big (unless you want to fish PE10 - 12). For PE8 - 10, you'll find a 16000 spool or a Yumeya 10000D spool ideal.

It appears to me that you're referring to the current model Stellas. The new SW Stellas will be out later in the year so if you're not in a hurry, you might want to consider that as well.

There is minimal weight difference between a 10000 and a 20000. The 10000 spool is supopsed to cast better but I use PE12 on a 20000 spool and it cast really well.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Thanks Brandon,

I'm going to be using Avani GT PE8, am i able to put a stella 16000 spool on the 10000FA or will i have to buy a STL16000? I was refering to the the FA reels, i dont need my reel untill july do you think the new reels will be out by then?

For PE8, you could get away (just) with a 10000 spool although a 16000 will give you more breathing space. The 16000 spool will fit onto the FA series of the Stella 10000 and 20000, no worries.

I expect that we will see some stock hit the international market around April but it probably won't be available domestically until later in the year. It would be good for you to understand the trade off between the current FA series and the new SW series. The current 10000FA can utilise the 16000 and 20000 spool. The new S10000 will have a spool of the same capacity as the current 10000FA but is a smaller reel. This reel will not be able to utilise the big spools from the SW18000 or SW20000.

I think (not certain) that the new SW18000 has a spool which will have a capacity of something like the current 16000 and Yumeya 10000D or perhaps a bit mroe than that.

Another very relevant factor is that the current 10000FA can be had for bargain prices at the moment if you shop around whereas the new SW series will be very pricey indeed on release. It really comes down to what you want. There will be no question that the new SW series is an improvement on the current FA series but the FA series is in its own right an excellent piece of equipment that he been proven time and time again.

Thanks for your help guys

If the new SW's dont come out in time and are as expensive as expected and seeing as i wont be able to put a 16000 spool on it i think i might just get the FA10000 and buy a 16000 spool for it seeing as the reel is at such a good price compaired to what it used to be. As you said brandon it is still an exellent peice of equiptment.
Thanks again

In Aus you should find some now between 800- $900, I did a deal on another 20000FA for jigging a couple of weeks ago, makes the reel good value.

Mate $610 is a great price - I'd suggest you grab it at that price

Sorry for not getting back to you quickly guys,

I saw the 10000FA for around $670 "buy it now" including postage from singapore new through Ebay and one go even cheaper (around $650) from the USA.

Brandon,
i can get the new SW10000 stella from the US for $850 now (they got it through the japanese market). It comes with a spare spool and spare oil sprays. Does this sound like a good deal compaired to what you've heard about the expected price?

mate, the reel has't been released yet so I would be very careful if someone is telling you it is available. I suspect that what you're being offered is the current model SW10000. You probably are not aware of this but the Japanese version of the current 10000FA is known as the SW10000. This SW10000 is not the same as the new series which gets released next month

You should be able to get a 10000FA in Aus for $850.  Won't have the spare spool but will have a warranty.
