GT fishing in the cooler months
May 07, 2010, 11:47:18 PM
With Winter approaching, the gradual change in temperatures is becoming more noticable. As the water cools down over the next few months, just wondering what anyone thinks of GT fishing in the colder months.

When fishing for impoundment barra in the lakes, the fishing becomes very different -  the fish do become harder to catch in general but there's also other styles of fishing that can work much better than in the warmer months.

Over here I definitely see a noticeable change in the GT's willingness to bite during the cooler months. I think you definitely see fewer smaller fish though, and the average size is probably larger - it's just frustrating to get them to take a popper some times.

In the whitsundays, I havn't noticed a big difference in number of gt's caught from summer to winter. There is different spots that I have noticed where the Gt's will fire in the cooler months but not in the warmer months which I find quite strange seeing as though the water temp is nearly the same.

cheers,
Nathan

The only difference I know is I can't get out as much due to the constant bloody trade-winds!  Oh and I suppose there's a greater risk of a Spaniard snipping off the lure.

In central queensland we get better weather in winter as the highs move up over the land.
I haven't noticed any major change in GT activity in winter. Activity seems much more aligned with water clarity and current....and opportunities to go fishing. So its the reverse of Cairns, we get more chances in winter.
Although I have noticed the peak time of day is the afternoons when the morning land breezes have dropped off and it calms down. Not sure if this effect is related to the fish or the fishers....I like it more when the breeze drops off.

Not really relevant to the big reef dwelling northern fish everyone on here targets, but in northern NSW we often get a lot less rain through the middle of the year. This allows the rivers to clean up and by the end of Winter the GTs move right up stream. It can be quite incredible to be fishing water that is holding school jew, gts, jacks and you even get the odd adventurous post spawn bass as by catch.

up the road from you guys in townsville we havnt noticed too much of a difference over the past few years, we still find and catch fish every trip, around the islands it becomes harder to find fish and get a bite. reef wise not much difference, id nearly agree with jay and say better quality fish. warmer clothes for the trip out and plenty of poppers incase the macks are in full flight :-) how often do you guys get out down there? mainly island fishing?
