Damon:- We ran to the east today and started fishing at around 9am. The tide was very low by the time we reached the reef, and we could not get into the shallow blue holes. No problem - we pulled out the light casting rods and had a great time catching goldspot trevally and shark mackerel. We lost a few GTs before heading to the far eastern edge of the reef for the run in tide. We mixed up a bit of quite successful mackerel trolling with some GT casting, but we had no luck keeping the hooks in the GTs. Sandy lost 3 stickbaits to large GTs, but we were unable to land any. We had plenty of action all day with lost of bites and saw plenty of fish, but ended with little to show for it. All up it was an entertaining day, with great weather and plenty of fish around.
Glanville:- Myself and Damon in the 2 centre consoles ran to the east today to seek a better anchorage and we started off our morning with a bang, second cast and we hooked up to a quality fish which ended up beating us in the reef, with adrenalin high we returned to the same spot and again second cast and Dominic managed to hook up to a beast, we steered the fish away from the reef and with a lot of shouting and nearly crying Dominic subdued the beast some quick pics were taken and the fish swam off with its tail between its legs with embarrassment, the next spot we stopped was game time and as the first lure hit the water, instant eruption which caught Michael by surprise and I think he is happy the hooks never stuck as the fish nearly lurched his shoulder out of joint, straight after this the guys noticed some birds in the shallows, by this stage we were only a half an hour in to fishing and off the mark with a cracker, spirits were high, we stopped on the reef and had some good action on the lighter gear with trout, mackerel and trevally. It was a mad rush then to catch the end of the run out tide, we missed our bus though and anchored up for lunch instead, after lunch we went in this little bay which was completely saturated with Gts and there was fish coming up all over the joint before I knew we had a triple hook up between the carnage and crossing over of lines we boated a fat black specimen of about 25kg, the action continued throughout the day and the guys saw some pretty cool stuff including a Gt eating one of the trout which ended up in tears on the light tackle. We ended off the day in mackerel mahem, trolling little lures down a particular ledge proved deadly and we boated no less than 25 mackerel 3 of which were quality sized Spanish Mackerel which are currently being prepared for dinner, hope they don't jump off the plate, they're that fresh.
Best Lure Today - Hellhound stickbait rigged with 7/0 decoy singles. This thing got so many bites it was unbelievable. We ran out of these on the boat at 1pm!! Plenty more on Odyssey!
Chris:- today we started off on the mothership. We towed the dories about to the east to a reef called cockatoo. We started off by throwing poppers on the edge of the reef. But unfortunately we didn't see a GT. We moved on to the other side of the reef, finding plenty of longtail tuna schools. We spent most of the day chasing them and in the end lost count of how many we caught. Most of these tuna ranged from 5 to 15kg in size which on 30lbs braid was great fun and kept us entertained for the remainder of the day.
Nick Report:- Well my day started off pretty much the same as Chris's with us only getting away at around mid day or so, with the tide on its way in already things were looking pretty promising with the wind also dying off since yesterday. We started fishing on a ledge close by working poppers and stick baits but no customers were present. So we went on tour on a change of tactics looking for some longtail and managed to find a pack of birds but again the longtail wanted nothing to do with us. The water was high enough to get onto the flats and into the blue holes so we headed in search for some GTs the water was pouring into the holes nicely and we managed to get a nice fish of 15kilos out of one of the holes which was worth all the hard work we had put in for the begginging of the day. Was a pleasant day out there.
