Whitsundays - Wharf GT
July 28, 2010, 11:54:23 AM
Hi All,

Just thought i would share a pic of my first Land Based GT.

On my way home from my Cairns Trip - i stopped of at our Work Conferance - at one of the Islands.

Being a "work do" i only sqeezed in two quick sessions before B"fast.

I hooked two fish and landed this one.

As you can see there was plenty of timber to avoid...so was happy to get it in.

cheers
mh

Yes well done Mike... like threading the eye of needle with all that timber around  ;).

What gear were you using?

You did well...!!..

I have had my bum smacked a few times in the Whitsundays.

Had GT's hit poppers right next to the pylons on the way back in.

yeah i was pleased to get it in. It was actually hooked with the twisted leader about to hit the top guide!.........i run them at 1.8m so it was not far out at all.
i had worked the sinking stick bait back to my feet and then just gave it a couple of twitches..almost "teabagged"the lure and it smashed it.
Luckily it made a run from the channel that you can see in the background, before it came round in a big circle back to the wharf.
I was using 100lb twisty and 80lb braid  - Saltiga 6000gt and Ian Miller blue water 24kg rod.(which needs a new guide from smashing against the pylon!)
i was at the same place two years ago and saw heaps of GTs round the wharf at night........so this time i made sure to pack the rod.
The guys that live there rekon thaey turn up almost evryday...sometimes mornings sometimes in the lights at night....they also don't really have the gear to land them so they were all pretty stoked to see one come up rather than smash them under the wharf!
thanks for the replies.

cheers
mh
