Issues with Stella sw10000 gearings
March 27, 2011, 12:24:28 PM
Hi all,
I have heard quite a number of feedbacks from tackleshops n my fiends that the Stella sw10000 n sw10000xg have issues with true gears being worn out after just 1-2 popping trips.

I am concerned as I intended to get them for popping.

I was advised to buy the twinpower sw12000hg reel which is supposed to be a workhorse.

I just tend to want to get stella more as price difference between a Stella and twinpower is minimal

Are there any users of these reels and any feedbacks?

Thanks

Sounds extremely unlikely Dave. Have you actually seen Stella SW10000 gearing worn out after just 1 or 2 trips? If not, I would dismiss that as yet more rumours that our sport is so famous for.

What I can tell you from personal experience is that I damaged the main gear on a Twinpower SW12000 after about 8 months of heavy, regular usage.  5 of the cog points started to show some very minimal wear. It did not effect the performance but it did make the reel a bit noisy. Shimano being Shimano, replaced the gear without question and I still use this reel a lot.  I also have a Twinpower SWA 10000 which gets similar heavy usage but no issues there yet.

On the difference between the gear materials on a Stella SW and Twinpower SW, this is from the indomitable Alan Hawk at Stripers:

1) The gearing of the STL is a cold forged drive gear with bronze surface treatment and a hardened stainless steel pinion. TP has the same drive gear but without the surface treatment, and a brass pinion.

2) Stella's gearing and internal parts and rotor are fitted to the main body that has the reel's stem as an integral part (12383). then the side cover is is screwed on. On TP, the parts and rotor are attached to a gear box (13327) that is separate from the part that carries the reel's stem (13313), before they are screwed together. Needless to say that the Stella's design is way stronger and more reliable.

I have not experienced this problem with my stella 10000sw.  Been a great reel, rock solid.

I don't think with all the work that Shimano puts in, that the gears would start giving up after 1-2 popping trips.

I have heard though that with the 10k, the gears do heat up a lot quicker and do become a little rougher, much quicker than the 18k or 20k, but I assume this has to do with the size of the reel itself.

I know of at least 3 instances where gears on a 10K SW have failed after a couple of trips. It is in my opinion that these reels were put through more punishment than the average angler would have put the through. That will not stop me using it as it feels perfect when matched to a CV or TBL on PE8. Just as with anything, there's bound to be a few which fail, it's part and parcel of GT fishing. If you get too overly worried about tackle failure, even at the extreme top end, stick with bream or whiting fishing!

I have had two 10000XGs since the reels were released. They've been on every trip I have been on since I bought them and they've been worked really hard landing GTs up to BIG. I don't even know how many trips that is but it is quite a number. To date the reels have been exemplary. I use SOM 16000 No Limit spools on them and they've been great.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

I have nothing to negative to say about my 10000SW. Its one of my favorite reels.

If someone is trying to sell you a Twinpower SW over a Stella SW because they are stronger, then they are either ignorant or a liar.

Is the back play in the handle or in the rotor? Meaning does the rotor go back a little, or is it only the handle?

I'm not sure about the rotor, but I can feel it in the handle.
