Hi Guys,

I hear a lot of different opinions from different fisho's on the best way to rig for GT fishing from using a twisty, using a straight wind-on and so on.

Being an relatively inexperienced GT angler (as I'm in Sydney i mainly jig) it is confusing to say the least.

I have a trip comming up and would like to learn the best method of rigging up for this type of fishing.

Would be interested to know what everyones thoughts are on the best method requesting details on leader weights, joining knots and so on.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris, as you mentioned everybody has their own preference when it comes to rigging, personally if I'm using PE8 i'll use the FG knot straight to 170lb galis, uni knot to swivel then split ring.. I generally have the leader long enough so the FG knot sits in between the first and second guides when I am casting.. This has worked fine for me with my limited experience, though I haven't fished any really nasty territory before..

I'm inexperienced GT angler too. For jigging, at today, I used PE 6-8 (or equivalent braided), nylon leader 140-200 lb, FJ knot or PR Knot, grommet (expecially for 200 lb leader) or swevel and aluminium crimp. For popping PE8-10, 200 lbs nylon leader or more, FJ Knot, grommet and crimp. I love grommet and crimp for leader-lure connection, even if a swevel should be more suitable for jigging to prevent twisting of line. I have to try to connect directly (whit crimp or uni knot) leader and lure (without split ring, grommet or swevel), but only for stick bait, 'cause I think swimming action should be more effective and easy.

Hi Chris Not too much popping experience from me either.Gts are a bit thin on the ground this side of the Tasman. On the two popping trips I have done I have used a twisted leader made from 120lb Black Magic supple trace connected to the braid by a very short Bimini twist.Leader length has been kept short so all the connections are within the guides, which reduces tangles.Popper is connected via. a swivel/split ring. When making the twisted leader I double it back on itself for about a foot to form a bite leader.Still trying to perfect my FG knot tying skills as this is another option I would like to try especially for stickbaits.Good luck on your trip.

Hi Chris,

Normally we use a PR Knot to connect our mainline #8 100lbs or #10 130lbs to a 210lb Sunline Big Game leader which we then crimp a 40cm long section of 330lb Sunline Big Game onto the end. This then gets a plastic sleeve, swivel and then gets crimped with a loop in the end.

This can be found here,

First part is twisted bite leader, second part is crimped single strand bite leader

How to make GT Leaders

Cheers
