A Shimano Stradic 6000fi has a max drag of 29 lb and holds 290yds of 30lb powerpro braid.Would this be suitable for GT's. if not why not.

Hey Doug,
I fish for gts a lot (1-2 a week) and bought a 8000 sustain the model up from your stradic and managed to strip the drive gear in 2 trips and that was only gts up to 15kg and I was using 50lb. I tested the drag myself and practical drag was only about 7kgs max. After that I think bits of the reel would start busting off if you hooked a big, hard running fish. IMO those model reels are only designed for 30lb use. If you wanna catch big gts it's Stella or saltiga!

       Cheers chris

Hi Doug, I think Christoffer has hit it on the head. A hard running GT, even a small one, will fry a Stradic.

If the cost of a Stella or Saltiga is limiting, my suggestion would be to look at a Shimano Saragosa 18000. These are by no means elegant but they are quite sturdy. It's not an appropriate reel for chasing monster GTs on a regular basis but will do the job on smaller fish.

Doug I am on south coast of UK I have carpenters and stellas if you wanted to have a chuck with some GT stuff.  just don't expect any bits in the english channel. I also have some PE4-5 stuff (not upto GT standard but fun for lighter stuff - sailfish and macks etc)

Drop me a PM if any interest
