Perfection loop and Aramid/Dyneema cords
December 14, 2011, 01:44:53 PM
Greetings to all. Some years back I tried fishing with 130lb JB hollow but it was way too thick. Now that they are making a 80lb test version, I'd like to try fishing with straight 80lb hollow looped to a few meters of aramid/dyneema cord as "bite/shock" leader. Will strip a little of the inner cord from one end of the cord to form the loop and attach a solid ring to the other end via a perfection loop. Question is, has anyone encountered knot failure with aramid/dyneema cord when using the perfection loop? The section of aramid/dyneema cord with inner core still intact will be left outside of my tip guide to facilitate better casting. Many thanks in advance for any insight provided.

Hi Mike,

I have no experience with the perfection loop. But why use a knot when you can splice a reverse loop with 100% line strength in all hollow lines?

You need a reverse latch needle and a few minutes practice to master the technique.

I have tested a good selection of knots/connections and the only connection which has never failed when measuring the breaking strength is the reverse end loop. With some practice it is furthermore possible to splice the reverse loop in most (all?) of the JB Solid lines. I have done it with JB Solid from 65lb and up. For some reason we have recently seen problems in splicing 100lb JB Solid, but this may be a fluke observation.

Well - this was obviously not an answer to your question, but maybe you will still find the information useful.

Greetings,
Dan

Hi Mike,

If I understand your question properly - why do you need to use a perfection loop to tie on the solid ring?

I would have thought you could use one of any number of knots to attach the ring...

sorry I have no answer to your question but my guess is that the perfection loop is only reliable when tied in mono

It's not the question you are asking Mike, but I think that would be a tough set up to use for GT fishing. A Dyneema cord has virtually no stretch in it so you would be fishing without a shock leader.

If you want a bite leader for GT fishing I think you would be better off with a twistie or a short hard fluorocarbon section between the lure and shock leader or a kevlar sleeve over the shock leader. All those methods give you abrasion resistance but you still have a shock leader.
