help buying 2nd rod??
June 11, 2013, 03:49:58 PM
hi guys as the heading says I'm in the market for a 2nd set up,  current set up is ripple fisher long cast 82/ stella 18k with spear spool and i also pack a saragosa 18000 and shimano gt special which is more a back up if anything brakes down, Ive mostly been casting poppers in the 120-150g range and recently sticks baits in the 120g range (still very average).  having just bought a stella 10k i looking at a 2nd rod but in 2 minds an with little experience i need as much help as possible.

Currently running pe8 an not sure to go heavier/lighter or strictly popper/stick bait rod and the more i read the more i get confused, or should i say greedy and want them all lol my biggest drama is with the rod i already own!! as not knowing what its over all usage or limit. it feels comfy working the lures in the range quoted earlier but thats coming from a guy with little knowledge of any other rod,

As i fish 95% of the time in the cook islands where pe8 seems fine on most fish an terrain, and poppers being the lure i use most due to easiest an hit rate i was thinking a strictly popping rod, so my real big question will the ripple fisher lc 82 handle stick baits when i improve??????or i should i buy a dedicated stick bait rod an learn on a good set up

Sorry if most these questions been asked before, i tried my best to read every rod post but that only made things worse an more confusing but any help on what my rods limits are would give me a great idea on where to start from, cheers guys

Byron,

Have you seen this video taken in Sourthern Oman?

As far as I'm aware the rod was a Ripple Fisher 82lc admittedly in the hands of an expert GT fisherman. Seems like you've already got a fantastic PE8 set up for both small poppers and stickbaits.

If you think you need to work 200g poppers to catch more fish, that's a different question. Reading too much can be bad for your bank balance.

My advice would be to just 'keep casting'.

Regards,

Trevor

PS The above advice comes from my sensible side. The real me has a growing stable of Carpenter rods and seven Stellas!

Byron, the 82LC is a very good all round GT rod.

It is not especially designed for stickbaits but the tip is soft enough to at least learn how to work them. Having a softer tipped specialist stick bait rod will not make the learning significantly easier. Practice, practice and more practice.   To give yourself encouragement get some lures that very easy to swim properly - eg ASWB Bungarra, Adhek Peninen.  Get those working well (really not difficult) and then perhaps move on to the more challenging stickbaits.

Then, if you decide that stickbaits are a good way for you to fish, spend the dollars on a specialist rod.

That would be the sensible way to go in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply guys I will invest in a couple of the lures u mentioned mark I have a 3 week trip next month so plenty of pratice time, Trevor when u say small poppers how small we talking??? Cause the lure I use most an have mist action in the cooks on is the cubera's in the 150g range, do u class that to big for the RF 82lc??? 120s work and are a  a lot less taxing on the body but the massive bloop attracts more fish, or that's what it seems like

Cheers guys

Byron,

To be honest, I've never fished with the 82lc, if I gave that impression I apologise.

If the 150g poppers work fine and attract fish keep doing it.

Trevor
