rod to work 60-100g sticks
March 16, 2014, 09:24:14 AM
Looking to add a new rod for my aitutaki trip next week for light GT and reef work  inside the lagoon ,will be matched with a 10000sw fishing 50-65lbs. will be used 80/20 sticks/poppers with mainly working sticks from 60-100g but more around the 60g mark

I would also like to use this rod for sydney kings and tuna if possible

I got a lot of great info from dan konig post on pe 5 rods ,  and was able to have a feel of the blue snipper 80/5 and loved it, also looked at the saltiga rods, these rods are at the top of the list in price and choice so far

my question is will the blue snipper work sticks in the 60g range or am i pushing it??

and also are the bottom end rods worth a look? shimano ocea and t curve stick bait range, wilson live fiber, jigging master or any other rod worth a look that i can get my hands on in a week???

How about a Race point 150 from Saltywater Tackle?
My experience with Gts in Aitutaki esp if you are close to the reef/bommies in the lagoon you will need PE6 minimum even on smaller models which are uncanny and strong.

thanks for the reply james, yeah i will also have a pe8 set up (gt82lc/1800sw)

I've just been out looking at rods and scatting my brain and what i really want and what the rod will be mostly used for

what I'm really looking for is a rod that can work 50-90gr sticks baits 80% and 20% lighter poppers with mainly sticks in the 60gr range

able to fish 40-60lbs

Used for

 * little reefies in the lagoon, blue spot trevs, small gts

* casting at the fads for small tuna and mahimahi

 *sydney kings (not nz lol)

as mentioned the blue snipper is the top of my price range, so any rod and thoughts would be appreciated

Hi Bizza  :),

Hope all is well.

Have a look at the jigging master range, you'll get it from........you know where from.

The surface assassin model at 7'5 ft two piece should fit your application and throw nicely all your lure weight ranges with your sticks/poppers you've mentioned and perform well with the expected fish species you're after. I've got on and it's nice.........and strong, it's more a PE5 rod and well balanced with your 10000 Stella. You'll love it for the Syd kings too.

Also, have a look at the Temple Reef 78H model, this too will fit your applications required and also you know where from. If you're wanting in that 8 ft length and for the price, consider the Daiwa Saltiga 80TN, that too will do it for you.

Good luck, and see you at the coffee place.

Tight Lines !.

Regards

Leo

The BH Magic Eye 804S is my choice combined with a Saragosa 10 000 and PE 5-6 hollow core braid for the lighter inshore fishing in Vanuatu in September.

Yes have owned the Blue Sniper 80/5 and it will work 60gm poppers and heavier if not too large a cup.  Nice rod and reasonably priced.

Byron,

My current favourite is the FCL Labo UCB 74 (It's actually 7ft 6)

Handles that lure size nicely and balances well with an 8000 reel and PE4. Poppers at the bottom end of the range.

Have put a couple of 20kg class GTs alongside the boat recently with it and the rod did a fine job (as distinct from the angler).

Rather than the Race Point 150 I would suggest Sami's El Maestro which is a lighter 7'10" PE4 rod that I like a lot as well.

Regards,

Trevor

Another vote for the FCL Labo UCB74.  It quickly became my favourite rod for casting the lures youre talking about at reef edges and in the lagoons when I did a trip through North Queensland.

Best i landed on it was a 15kg or so Maori Wrasse pulled from a couple of metres of water on the reef edge.  Yeah it's over gunned for say a few kilos of trout or emporer where the PE2 Synit Baycaster I was using was more fun - but with that sort of fishing you never know what is going to jump on board.  This rod was a nice mix of fun with the smaller reefies but dependable grunt when something bigger jumped on.

Ive attached some pictures that i'm sure Duncan from Fishhead won't mind me sharing.  They are ones he sent through to me when I was looking at purchasing the rod.

Saltiga 80tn or Yamaga should fit the bill nicely.
El Maestro looks the goods too.
I found someone here in Sydney selling their Carpenter TBL80/30 a while back, I reckon they've still got it if you wanted it.

That range you want it for should come in very useful, for Cooks aswell as back home for kings, tuna etc. For shallow reefs, lagoons etc and depending on weather - a capable light/mid tackle rod like this can be a trip saver. For lighter lures, I reckon the Saltiga 80TN @ 30g-90g +/- covers that the best. A worthwhile investment. Plus you could get one this week.

Cheers Dave

Thanks for all the great replys guys, was able to look at all rods mentioned above but regretfully I didn't pay much attention to the fcl, with my heart set on the snipper 80/5 I stupidly kept picking that rod up and also the saltiga.

Lucky I'm still havnt bought anything yet and got 4 days an easy access to all rods mentioned so I'll make sure to give the fcl a good look at,

One thing I'm semi leaning towards, it's also taking a pe2-3 set up for the light fun stuff inside that I'm looking at, and a solid pe5-6 like mentioned above by James to tackle the bigger stuff right on the reefs inner edge. unfortunately this time my partner will be coming as the house is done so I know I will be stuck in the lagoon at least one full day while showing her around maybe 2 so I don't want to waste any chance to cast lol And if the weather don't wanna play it's always a good back up plan.

Some big fish in the lagoon particularly around the milk water (bones feeding) at this time of the year. I'm sure Etu and his crew can put you on some. They're happy to mix it up not just specializing on bonefish.
