wooden poppers/stickbaits splitting

Hey guys,

I have managed to get 8 "sample" poppers and stick baits from a supplier in china.  All different shapes from dumbbells to suspending 200mm stick baits but on a recent test run found the wood on most had split to the point where they are pretty much useless.  Individually these are not the cheapest lures but come down dramatically in price when you buy bulk.

I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and if it happens to be the type of wood used or if they are not 100% sealed properly.  I know quality lures outperform every time but I cannot afford $40 - $60 a pop just yet as I am still waiting to win the lotto 

Alternatively if anyone has gotten on to a good cheap brand that wouldn't mind sharing it would save me a lot of trial and error haha

Instead of buying shit from china, buy some top quality lures for cheap money from Adhek ,Bali.

Thanks for the responses guys much appreciated... I have a few River to Sea Dumbells and Sebiels in my collection I was just struggling to find a reasonable priced popper with a bigger cup face for the deeper water popping just so I have all bases covered.

The  130g Jai Big Head sounds to be what you are looking for, and one of the easier ones to get a big pop out of, especially when it is choppy.  Elite Tackle stock them.

Another vote for the Jai bighead.

They create an awesome amount of commotion on the surface for a lightish lure. Cast really well also. I was out recently testing my new chug norris' and found the Jai much easier to pop.

The reason it's as cheap as it is though is down to it's rather ordinary finish. Trebles cut it up after a couple of retrieves but I found it didn't swim right with a single on the belly. But I guess the fish don't care if it's scratched up or not. I'm assuming it'll water log quicker than some of its more expensive completion though.

It's still super effective at raising fish with that big cup mouth though.

All mentioned are worthy of acquiring...don't discount the larger Sebile Splasher models...maybe even the Yo-Zuri Sashimi Bull Poppers would do.

As others have said, there are good established brands in the lower price ranges.  You do not need to go the route of Chinese "ebay specials". That so often ends badly as you have discovered.  The wood will split easily and also the wiring and swivels are often not up to much.

The Jai lures from Thailand are decent enough.

Heru lures in their various different brandings have a superb long term record and the Heru Cubera in particular has close to legendary status in GT circles. Made In Indonesia.

A little step up from both of those finish-wise is the Adhek range, also made in Indonesia and well represented by dealerships in different countries.
