What rod?

Hi,
I'm looking for a rod for fishing 100g poppers mostly and fish the occasional 150g max. Will be using 12kg drag with a max of 15kg using PE6. For big GT on small lures capable of putting good pressure on the fish.

What would you recommend?

Carpenter WV80XH or SP78UHL for the stated drag settings but 100 gr. lures may be a bit on the light side for these rods .

Jack, what you're looking for unfortunately doesn't exist and the idea of focussing for big GTs on small lures is a bit counter-intuitive.

A rod that can handle 15kgs of drag will be a rod that is rated around PE10-12. I know of no PE6 rod that is designed to handle drag pressure of that magnitude. PE6 rods generally operate around a maximum level of 10kg.

Big GTs will take small lures but people who focus on catching these generally use big poppers. I don't know why you're thinking of trying to focus on catching big GTs on small lures    Also, if you're wanting to catch big GTs, I really don't think PE6 is the way to go.

  Hi Jack,

      As Brandon stated not a good idea to target big GT with small lures.I'm not saying a nice fish won't attack a lighter lure but in the end you're going to run into problems with teminal tackle failure on 12-15kg of drag.
      Jon suggested two carpenter rods popular in handling PE10-12.When you got a chance look them up and see if they interest u.

15kg drag is a lot of grant . maybe you should lower it to say 12kg of drag??

the carpenter sp78h can handle pe6-10 but max drag are 12kg .


by the way there are a lot of different rod out there .

Shimano GT Special would fit the bill.

PE5 - PE8 (fish PE10 no problem), 100g-250g lure rating, 12kg drag...

That's as good as you are going to get for the specs you want...

I find it convinient to throw 100g and pe5.

 I mostly use 12kg with 140g  poppers but was wondering if there was a 'light' rod to take 15kg if required.

 As I was thinking of using it for marlin popping as well. Since capacity is an issue hence the pe6.

Jack, have a look at Hots. Don't know if they have rod that can deliver 15kg max drag but they should have one at 12kg and PE6. Alternatively go heavier on the rod rating and use a bigger spool if you are using a 10k Stella a 20k spool will fit and a Dogfight or Expedition spool will fit the Z6000gt.
