Baby Runbohs
December 23, 2008, 10:18:37 PM
Recently got my hands on some baby Runbohs. (Smiths Stickbait). I decided to rig the lure with twin sj 9/0's on the front a single 8/0 jobu on the back... Problem is the lure now sinks. Are the hooks to heavy ? And yes it is a floating version!

to be honest, that is not necessarily a bad thing. The lure will work fine this way. The floating runboh is a real fair weather friend - that is, it is really only suitable for calm conditions but if you can get it to sink slowly, it works great.

A few years back, the big runboh was my favourite stickbait but I really only liked it with some big Decoy GTs or Gamakatsu Recorders on it as that would cause it to sink slowly. Without this, it needed really calm water otherwise it would just flop around on the surface. Mind you, it was a great stickbait in calm water and was the right price too.

Unfortunately, Smith stopped making them otherwise it'd still be on the highly recommended list. I still have a small number of them but I can't bring myself to use them as I can't replace them.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

I recently got a few b runbohs to throw around with a lighter outfit and have rigged then with a combination of SJ-41's and owner STN76's in 4/0. They do seem a bit hook heavy but as they are floating runbohs i thought they would work nicely. Good to have this confirmed.

I'd love to see a Runboh as opposed to a Baby Runboh! Think they stopped manufacturing them before i even knew what a stickbait was.

You have the big runboh or the current model? I have no interest in the current model as I reckon the big Tailwalk Gunz is a better stickbait but if you have the old big runboh, I'm interested.

Are these old runbohs exactly the same as the babys but larger?

in the old model of the runboh, it would have been pretty close to being an upsized model of the small runboh. Thew new model of the runboh has changed a little. Don't get me wrong - the new baby runboh is a very good stickbait but I just prefer the Gunz Tailwalk. There's something about the Gunz which seems to really turn the reefies on.

Ewan - for your runbohs, I'd suggest you look at the ST-76 in the 3/0s and SJ-41s in the 9/0. The 4/0s are just a  bit too big for the lure and will probably impede the action. 4/0s will turn your floating runboh into a sinking one and if you want your runboh to sink, just get the sinking model. You could in fact probably get away with 2/0s for this lure depening on what fish you're targeting.

Thanks for the info Brandon. Yeah 3/0 are probably a more sensible option for the runbohs. I was actually after sinking models but couldn't find any in oz..
