gbr gts and bycatch
April 25, 2009, 09:21:32 AM
awesome conditions on the weekend so ventured out to my favorite piece of reef in the cairns vicinity about 70km off the coast. Gts were chewing their heads off with countless strikes, plenty of hookups and quite a few fish landed. Macks (shark and spanish) were also getting in on the act. Nothing quite like mackeral and gts both competing for the same lure. Highlights included a spanish launching clear with cubera in mouth, drops it mid air, lure lands and is smashed by a gt as soon as it hit the water, numerous strikes involving several competing fish and some pretty cool underwater snaps that I took.

Nice work Jordan - make the most of the good weather I say.

Great photo of the GT underwater with Cubera halfway down its gob.  Warwick and I were just saying the other day how we've never had a fish swallow a lure like that - they're always hooked up on the outside of the mouth...do you work your poppers slow with a pause?  We generally work our pretty fast...that's the only thing I can put it down too?

yeah mate I do work them pretty slow with decent pauses in between. I think your right with your assumption. i also think that they tended to get the whole thing in their gob if they were competing with other fish for it. My mate who was fishing with me was working his quite quickly and although he didn't get nearly as many gt strikes the macks showed a definite liking for the quicker retrieve.

That's great Jordan, looks like a nice day, they're some big sharkies.   I think I can guess where you were (wink wink nudge nudge)

cheers,

Thanks for the compliments gents. I thought the photos looked pretty good too. I went out to the same reef again yesterday and the fish were not quite as willing, but still some very good fishing. Leaping spaniards, a few sharkies, plenty of gts , one trout and a lousy noah made for a very enjoyable days sport fishing with the added bonus of a good feed at the end.
