new guy, going to vanuatu in a week
June 21, 2009, 06:21:43 PM
hi everyone, just some background, ive mainly fished the mid north coast of nsw, mainly live baiting for jew, long tails etc mostly land based. im also on the sportsfish extreme forum as "reelscreamer."

i land in vanuatu in just over a week, spending a week and a half in portvila with a weekend on santo island then back to port vila for two weeks to build part of a school and hope fully getting a fish in the arvos.

my first week and a half will be spent at resorts and ill be hopefully fishing, im going over with monster mesh 8.6ft, 80lb tufline on a spinfisher 850, ill take the emblem pro, big game surf rod, with 30lb on it incase i get to do some light land based stuff. ill just take rooster poppers and raiders as im on a budget plus dont fully know what to expect.

my question is do any of you guys know of any cheap boaties over there who can take me out? the charters are a bit expensive to go on everyday plus ive been told by some of the local tacklos to just stroll down to the local wharf and ask around, they said they did it and for about $30 a day they were taken out in massive tinnies to wherever they wanted, has anybody else found this to be the case?

cheers, this has been the most helpful forum and website ive found, good work.

I was in Vanuatu back in February, but didn't manage to wet a line  :'( :'(
Nice place, fertile land and super friendly locals. Food wasn't exactly cheap there, as most of it is made for tourists.

Near the main market in Port Villa there's a supermarket and next to that supermarket there's a chicken shop by the water. If you look into the water you can see some GTs, bluefin trevallies and some massive long tom swimming around. Not sure if you can fish there, but they are certainly fun to watch. At the end of the day the people that work in the chicken shop throw the chicken leftovers and these GTs love them. I've seen Golden trevallies further up the shoreline as well.

I don't know any boat based charters there but there are a few if you walk down to the marina. I think you put your name down on a whiteboard and wait for other interested parties and when you have a few people you'll go on the charter.

Cheers,
Mario
