Bigger Lure Catch Bigger Fish
August 16, 2009, 03:51:08 PM
Do you guys agree to that statement or disagree?

Please don't compare between 50g lures to 200+g lures....I guess you will catch bigger fish with 200+ g lures....in GT fishing....

Let's say between 140g compare to 200g..

cheers

Hi Bwanna ,

In my opinion , it's pointless to force oneself to use 200 gr. when you can't work the lure effectively . Too many use heavy tackles but can't even load the rod properly for good casting distance and work the heavy lures properly as well as when eventually hooked up with good fish , can't handle the outfit optimumly .

I am of the opinion that big lures do not necessarily catch big fishes and in particular , big GTs travel in pair and they are not among the school of smaller ones . To target big GTs , one must know where they are and cast accurately as well as work the lure effectively to entice strike . Timing of tides is critical too so it's a matter of be in the right place at the right time .

What we may see when using big lures is a lot more spray when used by strong angler but the same lure may not produce much when used by average angler hence it is better to use lighter lure . In my years of GT fishing , I have never used anything heavier than 180 gr. and even that was for a shortwhile , nowaday I use 125 gr. and lighter but work it effectively to give maximum spray .

I still observe " match the hatch " theory for any fishing situations .

Over in Taveuni,Fiji I threw around 150g cuberas alot of the time and caught some nice GT's

but the biggest was taken on a baby Halco roosta popper and PE 3 when I decided to target some bass etc..

Go figure... ;)

Pak Jon,
A very accurate and informative answer.

I'm still not sure what an I-cup matches the hatch with until now though.  :)

I think the question is seeking a response that is excessively black and white. I'd suggest that fishing comprises shades of grey and more grey ...........

Kasey - it isn't just an I Cup - what does any popper resemble that you've seen in the water?   ???

If it swims; I want to catch it!

as long as it moves and makes a splash then im sure it will get hit, regardless of the size, although David and Ruddy always say bigger popper bigger popper!!

In all honesty, the closest natural thing I can think of is a diving bird. I've heard myths that chuggers do/can be worked to resemble a flailing fish on the surface, but I've spent some time underwater observing some of them and its really got me going  ??? ??? ???

My opinion is that a chugger in action imitate a predator attacking baits and when it's in the vicinity of some other's territory , will draw the owner of that particular territory to retaliate and in doing so , got hooked . ???

Bigger may not always be better but if you want to weed out the bigger fish from the smaller fish a bigger lure might do the job. That said the best fish I have caught was with one of my smaller lures (100g)! Sometimes its just luck!! ;)
