Looking into get a rod for stickbaits

Are some rods more suited to sinking stickbaits or surface stickbaits and pencil poppers
or is a stickbait rod just a stickbait rod ?? lol if that makes sence

after a rod that would ideally throw stickbaits about the 100-150g mark nicely

been looking at the hots gipang and the newer gipang tide lez purely because of availability and seeing first hand the quality of these rods

which of there rods would be suited

a dedicated surface stickbait rod would preferably have a softer tip section so as to allow for imparting action to the lure, where as a sinking stickbait could be worked on a stiff tipped rod as well.
if you can get your hands on a carpenter TBL711 it has to be one of the best stickbait rods going around, i've only had mine for a month or so but its been a beaut to throw and work lures with so far. maybe other members who own hots rods can comment as the only ones i've played with is the XXXH and XXH, and that was only throwing poppers

As already mentioned the Carpenter TBL is a great rod for surface stickbaits. There's also the Ripple Fisher Ultimo which is very similar and probably more widely available.

TBL711/35RF is a great rod for surface stickbait in 100 ~ 150 gr. range , CV79/40RF SHP series is for sinking stickbait 100 ~ 150 gr. but DJ83MH and WV80XH found good use for use with heavier stickbait in 150 ~ 200 gr. range ,  all are from Carpenter .

The newer LGM ( Le Grande Mer ) rods such as LR88 n SP80M are designed for chugger primarily but can still work with heavier stickbaits , both durface n sinking types .

Sunny is right to point out that TBL series is a dedicated stickbait rod and only the very small chugger ( < 60gr. ) can be worked adequately with it while pencil popper of no more than 100 gr. still can be used with the strongest of TBL series , the 711/35RF .

it is nice to have a specialised stickbait rod if you want to work surface stickbaits but realistically, you need to think about just how much use you will get out of this rod. There aren't that many surface stickbaits on the market locally.

Only Carpenter and Ripple Fisher make specialised stickbait rods. The TBL is a personal favourite of mine but I have to admit that the Ripple Ultimo is a seriously good rod and their latest prototypes have me thinking seriously about adding to my stickbait rod collection. Of particular interest is a PE10 offering which I was thinking might be ideal for the heavy bigfoots.

The rods have more capacity than people think. I've been throwing 170g Orion bigfoots around with my TBL since day one. I also use pencils up to the same weight and have also tossed 130g chuggers around with it. It isn't an ideal chugger rod but it will still do the job.

For the bigger stickbaits (Bigfoots go up to 230g and Carpenter Gammas to something absolutely ridiculous), I don't think it matters much as long as you can find a rod that can cast that weight!

Another rod that is good to cast a long distance is LR88 which is an improved version of LR86 , the improvements are among others , ability to work stickbait beside the chuggers n the pencils .

The specs for both rods
LR88 : max 170g
and
DJ83MH : max 220g

thinking maybe the LR88 is more suited to the size stickbaits im looking at

Does any one know these rods sweet spot when it comes to casting weight ??

Hi Gabriel ,

LR88 cast a good distance using 80 ~ 100 gr. pencils n chuggers and 125 ~ 150 gr. stickbait but these are my opinion , stronger n bigger guys of equal ability may be able to do better / cast a lot longer using LR88 .

In it's infancy in the form of LR86 , this rod was designed for Maldives area where one must cast a long , long way to reach the fishy areas from a big tourist boats . LR86 has now been improved to become LR88 with added ability to work stickbait and I see the trend in all Carpenter rods to be improved somewhat to work stickbait in the future , such example has already been implemented in SP80M which is an improved version of SP79M .

LR88 is an all purpose popping rod , suitable for casting onto tuna n GT alike , based on a proven LR86 .

If I am going tuna fishing , my rods would be BC75MHS , HL TN87 , OMA92 n LR86  and  if I go on to a GT fishing expedition , my rods would be SP710H SHP , SP80M , CV79/40RF SHP n LR86 .

I've decided on going with the lr88 

I currently have a dogfight that I use for spinning and am going to purchase a 10000sw for my stickbait rod

or would the dogfight be more suited to the rod?

Either reel will suit LR88 just nicely , the DogFight will have more line capacity though .
