Why is it that with the australian Plutons, the faster retrieve reels have a lower drag rating than the lower ratio reels? Is it just that the drag slips differently via different gearing, or is it born out of fear for the pinion in the higher ratio reel if it gets overloaded?

Sam

In order to fit the taller gears needed in high speed baitcasters, the size of the gear teeth have to be made smaller. As a precaution, the drags in the high speed reels are reduced.

So if you want the max drag possible, go for the standard speed model.

Cheers

I don't really understand how they would deliberately manufacture reduced drags. I'm pretty sure they only produce I set of washers that fits the same recess machined in either the high or low ratio gears - thats what they do with the millionaires. I don't know it could be different with the plutons. could it be that with star drags, a fish pulling on the line is more able to overcome drag washer pressure via a high gear ratio set because it basically has a gearbox working in its favour now, compared to the 5:1? spool turns, pinion goes with it, but the drag washers slip easier because the main gear around them is either bigger diameter/bigger ratio/or both. I don't know - food for thought

Yes its a FULLY SIC rod but Ive since replaced that rod and now that the Ryoga has more drag than my BlackSheep, it should handle the rod quite easily.

Price?? Asking $350 + postage
Still got original rod bag.
