Rough water Poppers
July 19, 2010, 01:10:44 PM
After getting back from what suppose to be a popping trip and getting blown out by killer winds for 10 days  >:(, found a few poppers didnt like the rough conditions.
This is where the question arrises on what do you recommend to be the best popper that grabs the water and does not want to launch off every peice of chop?

Ocean Lady from Adhek Bali, 30 cm 160 gr, holds itself well in very choppy water.

Any " pencil " type poppers are good for choppy condition , stickbaits work too .

fullscale kongs seem to be easy to pop in all conditions I have used them in. And I am not an experienced popper and they catch fish for me! ;)

you have to concentrate a lot harder to pop in conditions like that. There isn't a popper in the world that isn't going to pull out if it is pointing down crest and you try to pop it hard. That said, there are some that will simply stay down better than others. Chris Young's Fullscale Kongs are excellent as are the Hammerheads in the G and I Cup. Among smaller poppers, probably no point mentioning these as you can't get them but the Carpenter Sea Frogs in the 140 and 160 size are excellent in the chop.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

I would also add the Sea Frog 120VP.  The cup on the tail really keeps that lure down in the water for me.

Also - and this is a very small sample size from last weekend (about 10 minutes) - I had pretty good luck with the Shell Shaping ???? (Summer Solstice/South Wind), which comes in 130g and 180g sizes.

Yeah the Hammerhead G & I Cups definately get a vote from me, as do the kongs (particularly the larger ones)...Fisherman Big Mouth HP tail seems to sit down ok too

As Brandon has said, I have found that what makes an even bigger difference than the lure you are using in those conditions is the timing of when you work the lure, time it wrong and it will flip etc, time it right and you can still get a decent bloop out of a lot of poppers (Ebipops excluded, I just cannot seem to get these to stay in ther water in rough conditions)

Like Brandon says - you really have to concentrate and time your popping with the waves. My suggestions on best rough water poppers would be Patriot Masterd Bombs, Full Scales and hammerheads.
Running an assist cord rig off the tail can help hold the lure in the water a little better in the rough stuff as well.
Sub-surface swimming lures have worked extremely well for me in rough conditions - in fact that they are the first lure I'd reach for in bad weather. Some good examples of this are the FCL SPP and the Patriot XTX. They swim like a cross between a stickbait and minnow as well as making a bubble trail if you let them float back to the surface. The hookup rates are pretty good too as the fish rarely miss-hit a sub-surface presentation.
