NC Deep Jigging 9-5-2010
September 07, 2010, 10:05:34 AM
Looking back, this was a trip of nice fish boated and lost monsters. Luck was not on our side Sunday.

Well Aaron (aarond), Justin, 1st-time guy Travis, and I left out of the Wrightsville launch at 5:45 with Capt Rick Croson. Mike of Liveline rode out with us with a group from NY. We got out to the AJ grounds to find beautiful conditions and set up the drift. Immediately we started banging fish on each drift, and they had some size to them. I hooked up to the 1st fish, and Travis soon followed with a nice 40 lb fish of his own...his first jigging. You could see the look in his eyes after, when he realized what he had gotten into when he wanted to come with us...he was in for a long day of pain haha!

shortly after, Justin hooked up to his second fish of the day. During the fight, which had justin moving up and down the boat, Aaron hooked up to a monster of his own on the Sevenseas rod. That fish was bigger than anything he had hooked in any of our trips...but the fish was lost to a nasty reel failure when it did a massive surge. However, Justin was still hooked up. After a grueling 20 min fight that kicked his butt, he boated a nice 57", 85lb AJ. Congrats bud. in the meantime, a 12ft manta ray came and checked out the boat. He hung around the boat for 10 min before disappearing. Amazing. Seriously, I need to save up for a underwater housing...

I boated a nice 70 lb fish, and Aaron followed with a 70-75 lb fish of his own. After that, we ran into a string of bad luck. Aaron tied on a Nagamasa while I fished a Nasout, and we both hook 2 freakin monsters that had us doing laps around the boat. However, we both lost our fish to freakish events...mine shook the hook a color and a half under the boat, and Aaron's mainline parted. We were hoping my fish would pop up to the surface but it never did...man it was massive, the largest jack I've ever hooked. Aaron tied on another Nagamasa and hooked up to a monster again...and again the line parted. It was just not his day for big fish...

We decided to go for some bottom fish and got 2 nice reds, but overall it was slow. In hindsight we should of just kept jigging for AJs. The weather was rough on the way in so we never had a chance to stop for topwater AJs.

All in all, it was a great day on the water even though we never could get a true monster to the boat. We got plenty of quality fish to the boat to wear us all out haha. We always enjoy fishing with Rick, and he works his ass off to put us on quality fish. See you soon brotha!

Gear used:
Stella JDM 20000SW PG
ZeeBass 25 (I'll let Aaron weigh in on this reel)
Accurate Twinspins

Synit 450
Star plasma jigging rods
Sevenseas Hiramasa (sick bend!)

Enjoy the pics

Santosh,

Drag spikes on the Zeebass or just a bad batch I wonder??? never used it but alot of people like the boat braid  I read.

The Hiramasa looks very nice. How deep do you have to drop for these fish in NC?

Thanks
Andy

Yeah i use boat braid too and really like it. The Zeebass had 80lb JB hollowcore on it, but that ended up being a reel failure. The bail arm bent in due to the drag pressure and dug into the spool, and that caused the line to get cut by the roller mechanism (which has a sharp edge). Poor design IMO.

we were dropping between 250-280 feet

Hi Santosh,

Is that you fighting an AJ with a Synit and Stella? How does the Synit 450 compare with the Sevenseas Hiramasa?

Cheers

Hey! I love the 450 Synit...it is a great for the bigger AJs over 70lbs...i could horse in smaller AJs pretty fast. Light and has a great bend and soft tip. I also have a 550 synit for bluefin.

As for the Hiramasa, it would be hard to compare them as they are rated differently...the Hiramasa is more like a 250 or 300g rod. It is extremely light as a feather (a little lighter than the synit). it's an awesome rod for AJs all around, but definitely was being tested by the larger model specimens! (as is evident in 10).

Hi Santosh,

The 450 is my favorite all-rounder jig rod as well! We sell Synit in Singapore and many of our customers who have bought the 550 find it too powerful and have stepped down to the 450 or even 350 :D The 550 will be nice for Big Tuna.

Synit was probably one of the first rod companies to use the new 45 degree double bias cross-carbons in their blanks.

Looks like Daiwa is next in-line with their new range of Hiramasa rods. Carpenter has these cross carbons in their Monster Hunter 80H and perhaps their BLC series too.

http://daiwa-swplus.com/saltiga/2010/05/

Check out the video clip in the link- interesting that Daiwa is publicizing some dead lift tests, I bet it's the first time Daiwa is doing this!

So we have these newer cross carbons in both jig and casting rods now...had a go casting with the Carpenter MH80H this morning, it casts really well, hope to get some Cape Cod BFT on this stick soon  :D

Cheers,
Mark

Are you coming to the cape soon?

We tested out the synit 550s on bluefin in Hatteras, North Carolina this past spring and they fit the bill perfectly. They're good rods for fish over 200

Hi Santosh,

I was up with Capt Dom for 3 days in August but did not get any Tuna unfortunately. There was a giant bite going on but they were not interested in lures/jigs.

Hope to make it up again in October this year when the bite heats up...from the reports on 360 it still seems looks kinda slow although its September?

cheers,
mark

Yeah its been a hot year...but as soon as that water temp starts to drop it should turn on.

Personally, I can't wait until the hatteras bite :)
