I can't see this being a viable destination for the foreseeable future. No fishing is worth taking risks of this magnitude.

The Gt's and the location is phenomenal! Bit shattering that this isn't a safe place to travel to at this present stage!

Whats it like to travel to at the best of times and how would be the best place to get there from aus?

We can always fish another day but we has only 1 life to fish, so why take all that risk??

Cmon the island is 400 klms away Im sure you could pick up a couple of AK47s  to take along it would add to the adventure.
Seriously I cant see these boats being of any interest to pirates. In fact if you saw these guys from a distance what interest would there be,I cant see a fisherman rod being of any great significanse to them but I am interested to see the R2S poppers though.I would be more than willing to embark on a group trip if anyone else was willing

I'm sure that was what David Wilson thought too when he embarked on that nice leisurely holiday to Cambodia

We all know they've hijacked many vessels and tanker for ramson already, might one day turn to kidnapping foreigner's when petrol security limit their souces. Overcoming and hiding a victim is much easlier than a tanker, Then your AK47 will come into use not R2S popper.

MONSTER GTs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why some man try to walk to the pole or climb Mt Everest? Why risk your live in such expeditions? Some people would say its just stupid I would say it is the spirit of life, it makes life worth living... . Thanks for sharing Vincenco!

Kidnapping foreigners/hijacking very small vessels have already occurred several times. A Danish sailor family including three children was taken as hostages last month.

Real time monitoring of pirate attacks can be seen here:
http://www.shipping.nato.int/CounterPir
http://www.icc-ccs.org/home/piracy-reporting-centre

East of Socotra you have an Al Qaeda stronghold
West of Socotra you have the backyard of the Somali pirates

Many of the armed groups in this area carry much heavier weapons than e.g. AK47. A share of the profit generated from previous hostage takings has been invested in heavier weapons, better equipment etc. Anglers who decide to carry e.g. AK47s (and use them) are not likely to survive a meeting with Somali pirates. Staff/administration on tankers crossing through the gulf hesitates to carry weapons since they fear extreme levels of violence when the pirates eventually will hit the vessel. With all respect - this is not a playground for cowboys.
