Ocean Revolution Black Devils BD200 rod
February 28, 2011, 06:55:36 PM
Hi all,

I am helping my friend in Qatar to check on what reel can he use to match the OR Black Devils BD200 rod.

The rod is rated at PE6 so most probably he will be using the Varivas PE6 line (83lbs) to pop for GTs and using Eltoros 125-150g and occasionally the craftbaits 150g.

Not too sure if this rod can handle the chugging of the craftbaits which have quite a big cup.

Reels under considerations are :
1. Shimano Stella SW10000 (US Model)
2. Shimano Stella SW10000 (JDM Model)
3. Shimano Twinpower SW12000HG

Will greatly appreciate any inputs as I will be getting the items by 10April before sending over to him

thanks

For PE6 popping you could add to the reel list Twinpower SWA 10000 (the export version of SW12000 with smaller spool) and Saltiga Z6000 GT.

Hi Mark,

Many thanks for your reply.

My friend is wondering if the BD200 is a suitable rod for him to fish for GT as the BlackDevil 200 is more of a Tuna rod??

The rod seemed to be quite soft wondering if he can use it to chug 150g craftbaits- like popper?

thanks

Dave, your friend is asking a little bit too much from the BD200 if he wants to chug 150g poppers. Notwithstanding that it is stated to be a PE6 rod, the rod can handle PE8 in the hands of a sensible angler. It is useable for GTs but I would be thinking poppers up to maybe 120 to 130g and stickbaits up to 140 to 150g. 150g Craftbait is asking too much. The ideal reel would be something like a Stella 10000 or a Daiwa 5000.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

hi,

i have used this rod to chug a craftbait GT2 150grams, seems it was able to handle it, but then e seas was pretty calm during then. i coupled it with a old stella 10K, with 16K spool, loaded with GT max PE8 lines

Pretty sure it would do great as a stickbait rod - any of the three reels should do him grand (I have both Stella 10K and TP 12K) ... not sure its a chugger rod as its designed for Tuna fishing and  flicking out stickbaits so doesn't have a stiffer tip ...

The reviews for the bD200 are quite good.
I was thinking of buying the BD300 to chug..
Mike, have u tried using the bd300 with gt3 craftbaits?

I m still on the lookout for my own chugging combo..

Out of interest, are the Ocean Revolution rods still available other than remainders left in stores from old?

I thought that Carpenter had shut them down for trademark theft of the name?

Hi mark,
I saw the BD300 under the "temple reef" branding now.

am considering between buying the BD300 blank or a Spinal SP78 blank for chugging GT3.

Mark.

They are called Temple Reef now.

Same rods, different name (I bought myself both BD100 and BD200 on a special x-mas offer for tuna)

Isn't this BD200 based on Smith's WRC80P/35 ?
