FG knot in ultra light lines..

I was trying to tie the FG in really really light 4lb braid this morning......(not sure why as I have never had any problems with the Improoved albright)........However I found the FG very difficult to tie in such fine braid.

The braid just didnt seem to bite into the leader the same as it does with heavy stuff.

Is this quite normal..?...

Peter, I have never tried it in braid that small either. Just curious, were you using a braided PE or fused PE line?

I quite commonly use it in my light fishing,
the trick is to do more twists, i generally do the twists quite close and my knot ends up around 2cm long.

When im fishing Oyster racks and might be casting 15lb fluro through my bream rod with very small guides i use an FG and it works very well.

The braid im normally using is Toray Seabass Power Game in PE#0.8 (15lb)

Yes thats exactly why I thought I would experiment with the FG in the light stuff as its so slim line for casting...(much more so than the albright).

if you cant manage, try the the ordinary uni to gt knot. thats what i use for my 4lb setup and seems to work fine

The lightest FG knot i have tried was 20braid to 25lb fluro leader when chase yellow tail king, seem to hold very good never had one go on me yet.

i managed to tie one using 4lb Finns windtamer to 25lb YGK galis fluoro. i caught quite a few barra on it but i never bothered tying another as the improved albright does the job fine.

I've been using FG knot for about 10 years (I didn't know its name at that time), mostly for freshwater lure fishing at the beginning, but I've never tied it on such a light braid (4lb). I've been using braid from PE 1 (12lbs) to PE 12 (170lbs).
regarding the lighter braids that I use from PE 1 to 3 (10-30lb) connected to fluorocarbon leaders, it really is a perfect knot in terms of resistance and castability through guides, should it be a spinning or casting outfit. Most of other knots just don't offer its huge resistance and its amazing wide range of use.

I even use it for coarse fishing, as I am using braid for feeder fishing, and FG knot to connect braid from the reel to a 10m nylon leader which provides elasticity.

I've tied and used FG knot in 4lb braid (nitlon) and 4lb leader while bream fishing. Required enormous patience to get the pressure right when tightening  - I broke/cut the leader more times then too much slack. To be fair, I was only really seeing whether it could be done as well, and didn't think the time it takes justify the result. I tend to use a lot of different lb leaders with this type of fishing, and when you can tie a slim beauty in a min or so, I didn't think it was worth it.

I don't bother using friction knot when dealing with light line , I use twisted leader for such task .

The lightest I've tied was 0.8PE to #25 fluro leader.  Takes a bit more attention then say PE8-12.

Hi Pete I have been tying 6lb(pe 0.6) sw famel to 8lb leader latley since i had a few failures with the double uni, but it took a lot of practice as the line is so thin and like you said and doesn't bite as easy, since i got it soughted i haven't had a failure yet.

I'm quite unfamiliar with twisted leader, just got some questions.
Do you always have a bite leader when using twisted leader?
What knots do you tie?
If you want 10lb leader, do you twist 5lb mono/fluoro?

I don't bother using friction knot when dealing with light line , I use twisted leader for such task .
