Amberjack Trip
November 15, 2007, 09:34:58 PM
Gents,

I went on an Amberjack jigging trip recently with some mates off Central Queensland.
We were approx 80klms of the coast in 45m of water. There were 8 of us on a 11m Voyager Cat, what a day...

Approximately 80 to 100 AJ's, we lost count, numerous tuna and trevally came on board all caught on jigs.
I had read all the stuff written and watched Jigging Master and Jones Tackle dvds about top hook rigged jigs
and I guess I was a little skeptical on how effective they would be.
Not any more. None of the fish were above 12 kilo's but they fought well above their weight and were all cleanly
hooked in the mouth. I couldn't believe a fish that size could stop my jigging action in its tracks and pull me
into the gunwale. The most effective jigs were in the 200gm size in any colour.

We soon worked out the routine. More than 12 turns of the reel and a Mack tuna was the result.
They fight well but end up doing Tuna circle work on the surface and tangled all lines near.
If only 10 to 12 turns of the reel were used the an amberjack would be the result. Every drop a fish, great fun.
I know of an approx 40kg fish landed there, none for us that day but I did get smoked on 100lb leader, maybe........

One thing I learn't was that T Curve 400 spins hurt!!  They don't bend down low, a fast action, must purchase a better rod.
But my Salty Expedition loved it!!!

Cheers,

Ken

great trip, Ken. That is a lot of AJs for one trip!
The 400 will bend all the way through to the butt provided the fish is big enough. It is, however, a PE8 rod. A 40kg fish would certainly have gotten it to being all the way down low! if you prefer a PE8 rod with a more forgiving profile, a Smith Nirai would be the go BUT they don't give them away and it will still hurt when you get to the point of really working the rod.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Brandon,

On the previous trip 27 amberjack were caught. I guess we lucked upon a "hot" bite.
I caught 6 fish for 6 drops in about 20 minutes at one stage. We drifted approx for 2 hrs and were
still catching them.
The wind and tide were opposite so we were drifting back and forth over the same area.
Great fun even if they were not big. One of the guys videoed about an hour of the session.

I am still not sure about the TCurve 400. I have caught an estimated 200kg lemon shark while
fishing for Red Emperor using PE8 and I don't think it bent even then!! 40min fight ended by me cutting it off.

The Nirai certainly looks the goods, more parabolic. A custom 350 gm Jigging Master could be on
the cards as well.
Hmmmm Xmas coming up!

The T-Curve 400 loads up alright Ken. These pics are of Cam 'Stellajigger' Foley on a 35+kg Ambo ;D, I wouldn't mind the Nirai either but at the 4X the price I can wait [a little bit] ::)

Great photos guys.
I was sorry we didn't get too many photos like that, but its hard to pick
up a camera when the fish are on.
I guess I was comparing the 400 with another guys Saltiga rod. It seemed to
have an smoother bend the TCurve.
Maybe I'm looking for an excuse to buy a Smith. ;)
