Hi Aaron ,

None taken so no worry here , target fishes keep on increasing so I keep on learning , it started with GT/RedBass  and followed by YFT/Skipjacks and Mahi-mahi/Queenfish/Threadfin salmon and now Sailfish .

I heard from a friend in Sydney that Kingfish in Lord Howe island are susceptible to small lures and a few dogtooth tunas have been caught using popper , likewise sharks although these are what I still term as
" colateral " catches .

Would be pretty spectacular to watch a sail smash a popper!!!.... :o
Your heart would be going... :D

I agree....Anything large that smashes poppers is awesome fishing.

Well done

Pete

Hi Peter ,

I think Australia has the biggest potential for target fishes that can be caught by using casting technique , most of them are still undiscovered and it's just a matter of time before they will be a change in the angling scenes in Australia from predominantly trolling to something else , such as casting n jigging .

As for sailfish popping , I am pretty sure the Western Australian anglers will try this technique at Broome , after all Mark Rochfort has been
to Rompin and had reasonable success in his first ever trip there .

You guys are lucky and Australia is a Lucky Country ...... !

Hi Jon,

I could'nt agree more, I for one pretty much exclusivly use poppers now for all species, I've caught snapper, bream, whiting, flathead, wahoo, longtoms, yakka, kings, trevors, squid, sharks, dugong :o -by accident of course - and more, all on poppers - I love this technique with its a visual strike and they always release well and alive, as I rarley eat fish -  I have seen on a number of occasions black marlin chase my bigger poppers all the way to the boat all lit up but i cannot seem to get a hook up.

Australia sure is the lucky country.....

I did a lot of fishing for sailies in the mid 80s with spinning gear off Cape Moreton, casting livies to the sails. I did try poppers on them then and while they would follow, I found them very difficult to entice into a strike. If they did, hook-ups on trebles were few and far between. This was in the pre-braid era.

Pete, I don't think Jon can beat a dugong. You're a deadset legend!!  ;D
btw - did it put up much fight? I'm going to start a thread on funny captures on rod and line.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

G Day Brandon,

He sure did put up up fight, I have to follow him for 30 minutes before I could untangle him, I must be honest though he wasnt ensactly going for the popper as much as he simply swam though the line and got all tangled up - I wanted to be sure that all the line (PE8) was off him so chased him down, I dont think the other fishos around were real impressed with me and to their credit even follow us to ensure the dugong was safe  :o  and that I wasnt trying to keep/hurt him, but once they saw me jump in with him they realised I was indeed helping him, (and that I'm crazy) what an effort though - they are so ruff  - lucky they need to breath air and come up every few minutes.   :D

All in the day of a GT Warrior............    ;D

Hi guys ,

I hooked onto a Whale shark measuring 8m and a Manta ray measuring some 3m across , each time it became a tackle testing how much load one can excert to saturate the rod in order to break the line , if left at the pre set drag we wud have lost all the line in the spool and a full spool Avani GT line isn't cheap to replace ! Not a one upmanship but these did happened over the year .

Peter ,

I know how you feel about hooking onto a dugong , you must have received more scrutiny than just if you were to hook any other lesser protected animals .
