T Curve 15-24 Spin
July 09, 2011, 04:38:16 PM
Hi Guys,

I know this rod isn't designed specially for GT fishing, however I was wondering if it would 'For the most part' get the job done?

We do an annual trip to the Swains / Coral Sea each year and want to give popping a good shot next trip - ideally without having to buy another rod (currently have the T Curve).

I'm interested in your thoughts!

Reel pairing is a Stella SW 20000.

Cheers Ben.

A number of years ago, Nomad Sportfishing had some of these rods available where customers didn't have their own gear. They performed admirably when you take into account that the rods were never designed for heavy braid.

My suggestions would be to arm yourself with a more budget model GT rod like a the T-Curve GT. It is asking a lot from this rod.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

I saw one of these sitting next to a GT special in a shop yesterday and thought it looked like it could do the job of a light stick bait rod.  I agree that asking it to consistently be your GT rod of choice is a push but for just having a crack with some stickbaits and small face poppers or pencils like say a skipjack, without splashing out on a new rod it should be some fun.

The later models seem to have a bit more grunt down low than the older ones, not quite as 'noodley'. The Taylor brothers have used them successfully of the rocks in the Whitsundays on some decent GTs, stick to the Stickbaits and Small Poppers as Travis mentioned and cross your fingers, good luck  :D.

Thanks Gents.

When your advising small poppers and stickbaits, due you mean types like:

- Halco Haymaker 195
- River2Sea Dumbell 200
- Willson Jet Popper 175
- River2sea Doggie 168

Thanks Ben

I don't think the guys were quite thinking big Haymakers and Dumbells when they mentioned "small poppers", Ben! ;D

The rod is a compromise that you can get away with for casting some lures to GTs on the side but I'd suggest that if you want to cast GT sized lures, you focus on stick baits. The tip of the rod simply isn't going to be firm enough for bigger poppers.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

I've seen the guys on Fishing WA using the rod and Haymakers - but I'll take your advise, as I don't want to bust the rod - it was a present!

It won't break, Ben. The rod will just-oversaturate on the big poppers.
