Whitsunday GT - Out wide!
January 08, 2008, 04:17:54 PM
Hi,

Here's a short report from a 2 day trip around the outer Whitsunday islands, fishing with our cousin, Coen.

Coen was awaiting the trip for a while, as he lives in NSW and was eager to fish for GT!

Our plan was to take him around the outer Whitsunday islands, casting Ulua's to any interesting areas we discovered.

This GT came on dusk, where we had 4 follows & 1 hook-up in the last 1/2 hour before sunset.

This Trevally was hanging around 2 large rocks out from an island in the morning.

The rocks had a large boiling baitschool in the smooth up-current side, and we could see GT hitting them and making them shower.

We casted around this area for 10 minutes and got 2 GT on & 2 more strikes.

Most GT here were around 15kg - 25kg.

And the kart racing gloves worked great too!

This fish was caught on the Ulua 150 stickbait casting around the same patch of rocks.

It's strange how some of the GT are darker than others, some have stripes and some don't.

This GT was very dark and had awesome lines near it's head.

It was released and swam away greatly.

This photo is out of some video footage where we found a huge concentration
of big GT.

As you can see, we are hooked up casting from the rocks!

We had 3 Nomad Ulua's, a 90, a 120 and a 150.

At the end of the session we only had the 90 left and we were shaking from all of the strikes we had!

All three of us each had a turn at the GT from the rocks, Kerrin was first with the 150.

He hooks up over the bommies and breaks off a GT around 25kg.

Then, I cast out and a half way through the retrieve the 120 Ulua is taken by a GT of about 22kg. It runs around the rock we were fishing from and cuts the line on the sharp coral.

We then tell Coen to have a cast with the Ulua 90.

He makes a long cast across the bommies and works the lure back with a good retrieve.

A GT strikes and misses the lure, so Coen keeps working it back. The GT comes back and strikes again and takes the lure front-on.

Coen sets hard and the fish pulls him along the rocks, heading out towards the bommies.

Amazingly, the fish stays away from any sharp objects in the whole battle and eventually we tail the fish near the rocks.

It was Coen's first GT on stickbait and was probably around 21kg, a great capture from a begginer on slippery rocks!

We had a blast on this trip and Coen got what he wanted; a GT on stickbait.

The outer Whitsunday islands are an amazing place to fish, the water is so deep and fishy! There is so much places to explore.

Each time we go out there there is always something new that we find and the whole section of the outer islands look stunning.

Nice fish, good lures those Ulua's.  Dropping two in a session would be a bit annoying though.

For posting video's Youtube is pretty damn easy.  Just load it up onto youtube and then you can post the link.

Well done - Again -

The rod has a serious bend in it on the rocks - respect......

By the way, do you fold the barbs back ? I only ask because if so- then it is not uncommon to find your stick bait floating down current after a bust off, if you do ?

GT's generally dont like facial jewellery......

At the price of those suckers I generally spend a little time looking - you can be lucky........
