My rods have been stuck like that. I wrap an ice pack around them to let it cool, and put some water in the join, but not oil or grease . I wrap the blank with masking tape, put some exercise gloves on and then try and twist. Eventually it works, though I gave up a few times and left it a bit, then slowly got it undone. After a few uses it gets easier but till then it was a pain for my rods too.

These are a couple of extracts from another site that may help.

[1] 'It's also a good idea to dis-assemble rod sections at the end of each fishing day. Temperature changes over a period of several days often have a lot to do with sections becoming stuck.
Graphite and glass ferrules usually stick due to temperature changes that tend to lock them in.
Heat sometimes makes things worse as it expands everything - meaning that the male ferrule OD gets larger and the female ferrule ID gets smaller. In other words, the fits gets tighter.
Cold is what you want. Set the stuck sections in front of an air conditioner for a while, or if you have a freezer that can handle the length, put it in there for a few minutes'.

[2] Guys I tried everything, hot water, cold water, cold on the male section, hot on the female section, strong pulls, masking tape, tyre rubber, 2 persons pulling on each end, finally I did the below:
1) Carefully prised off the gimball fitting,
2) Had round wooden stick tuned out to the ID of the female section so it was a good fit but not tight or touching the blank in any way.
3) Put a rubber cap on the end of the stick and tapped it out with no damage.

hello guys,
my friend known this problem with this rod (tokara 60) after a 3 weeks session of fishing in NC.
I think the assumption from Greg is probably true : after few days of many differential temperatures (between night and day), the female ferrule seams to get SMALLER while the male ferrule get LARGER !!!
and we try many time, with pad, with oil, after refreshing the rod, etc.... without result.
finally we decide to try again the following day , two persons pulling on each end and ...."eureka, it's working"

I think, specially for this rod, the best protection its to dis-assemble rod sections everyday , as Greg advise
And maybe report this problem to Mr Smith  ;)

Personnaly, I use Fisherman rod (GT game TRS) and not problem to pull it apart after many days

p.s1 : I've already known this problem a few years ago whith a pike rod (daiwa shogun) and i solve it with...... a saw  :P

p.s2 : excuse my approximative English writing, I'm only a Frenchy........

Thierry.

Neils way is the best way by far, someone helps fix the problem and you get a reason to go to Jones Tackle  ;D ;D

Mick,

I'm a new member to the forum and often fish with Steven "The Cairns Bommie Basher", in fact I usually take his photos (jammy sod that he is).

I once had the same issue with a jammed rod and solved it by heating up the stuck joint with a hair dryer then covering the joint in ice cold water. The heat makes the joint expand and obviously the cold shrinks it rapidly. That should work. If not, reverse the process ie cold then hot.

Once you get the joint apart, I found that the best things to stop it happening again are to either:
1: Rub a wax candle onto the male section of the ferrule, then removing surface wax with a cloth - the wax fills the tiny gaps in the carbon/graphite and lubricates the joint, or;
2: Spray the joint with a "dry" PTFE lubricant like CRC Dryglide - this has a similar effect of lubricating the joint.

My used my sons football hi grip gloves to take apart my GT Fisherman rod when they were stuck pretty good. The gloves has superb grip.No wonder that Randy Moss doesnt drop many long passes.

it's a bloody nightmare when this happens!

I have found the Smith's to be particularly susceptible to this and I think it is because they make it so close fitting in the first place. The rods which have the most easily separable joints are the Carpenters and I have never had such a problem with any of mine.

As Greg mentioned, it's a good idea to separate your rods after each day's fishing. Another good idea is to invest in a rod belt. These permit you to get a really good grip on the two segments and they help a lot in separating the two sections.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

I have been waxing ferrule joins for years, mainly on fly rods to keep them together while casting, It does also make them easier to pull apart, I found if they get really dificult I use one of those rubber mat thingies that women use to get the top off jam jars, ::).  Never ever use wet crc/wd40 products, these will in fact react with water & heat and make the join harder to get apart :o.
Cheers Chris

Chris, that's what rod belts are made off. You wrap them around the rods and it allows you to get an amazing grip on them
