Doing it the real way on Big Island!
Three friends and myself made a day trip south side adventure into some remote fishing grounds. We loaded up our day packs with some water and fishing tackle and drove to the southernmost point of the USA. Once we got there, we tied on our boots tightly and started on a full day of searching for GT's on foot.
The midway highlight of the hike includes a 350ft vertical cliff that requires some serious balance and a rope to navigate downwards- especially carrying fishing rods! Atop the cliff makes for an excellent position to survey the conditions below, as this area is notorious for giant crushing rogue waves. Luckily though, this day was as calm as we've ever seen it and the fishing spots looked very inviting.
After a short rest after reaching the bottom of the cliff, we tied up out gear and got right into some excellent fishing. 3/4 of us each took strikes on our first casts with the small game gear.
Throughout the rest of the day we covered about 9 miles of distance and managed to find consistent action from small goatfish to medium sized GT.
An excellent day of fishing for sure, but the scramble back up the cliff at the end of the day as brutal as always!
Some photos of the little adventure:

ImageShack.usThis is a sunken lava tube that stretches out over the reef for about 100m. Its only accessible to venture onto when the waves are small. Even still, you always have to be watching out on that spot, just one decent wave will erase you off the rock. Schooling bluefin trevally are always around this structure.

ImageShack.usIf there was a 50kg GT down there, it would've been right here, but good luck landing it though. Big waves, tunneling caves, deep water, and sharp shallow reef, all in one small area. Surprisingly no strikes at this prime spot???

ImageShack.usGotta catch a bigger one than my friend! Had to lock this one down to keep him from an outer reef, the UC100XXH ruined his day!

ImageShack.usRelease photo, you can see the fish about to enter the water below. The reef looks shallow, but its about 2m deep right at the base of the cliff.

ImageShack.usTaking a rest at the farthest point of the hike. We all needed a break before making the 4 mile hike back, and especially for the climb back up the big cliff.
